LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS
MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Present: Mr. W. T. Strand (Mayor) and Councillors A. M'Bain, W. MektrunV, A. F. Roberts, D. A. Ewen, L. T. Watkins, W. G. Teagle, A. J. Hobbs, and E. \V. Hunt. .
The extension of the sewer in Te Monu street is to be put in hand as soon as tho weather is favourable.
H. M. Hayward drew the attention "f tho council to Ihe dangerous condition of several road corners in the borough. Mr: C. A. Odlin also wrote in regard to the corner of Randwick road and the road off the pipe bridge. It was decided to compel the owners of hedges on dangerous corners'to cut the hedges, down to within six feet of the pavement. On the motion of Councillor Hunt, 1 it was decided to obtain a report upon all the dangerous comers in the borough, especially with regard to where lences encroach on the road.
Mr. A. Pere, on behalf of Mr. Kearns, i wrote claiming a sum of money as recompense for damages alleged to_ have been caused by storm water flooding Mr. Kearns's property. The letter also called on the council to do'certain work. On the- motion of Councillor Hobbs, it was decided to metal the road in front of Mr. Kearns's property. Mr. A. Ilumgay Tvrote regarding an alleged blockage of an open drain in Rossiter avenue, which he stated caused j a flooding of his property. The engi-! neer was requested to inspect the locality and give the: matter immediate attention if necessary. The following recommendations'of the Works Committee were adopted :—No. ac-1 tion to be taken re the purchase from | Mr. Dowden of the section next the pumping station, offered at £1000. The engineer to attend to footpath in Colin street. No further action to be taken re the piping of a private drain through' the property £>f Mr. J. G. Helyer and others. That Mr. Admore be advised that the forming of a proper path and channel in King's road would be considered. That Rev. W. Howe be granted a permit to build in Barraud street. That the engineer attend as soon as possible to the clearing of Copeland street and the footpath in Hautana street. That application be made to the Lands ' Department for a metal reserve at Normanda.le, to' bo vested in the council. That the Gas Board be asked to attend as soon as possible to Victoria street, and also ( to have all gas mains lying on ilia streets lifted, as same were a danger to traffic. The following recommendations of the Reserves Committee were adopted :— That six tons of lime be purchased for use on the recreation ground. That the Rugby Union be allowed to charge on seven occasions for entrance to the Recreation Ground. That, -the Waimarie Croquet Club be asked how many courts it desired to have, at a cost of £7 10s per court for the season. The engineer, Mr. E. J. Barnes, reported that the Normandale road had been put in fair order; that four additional street lights had been erected; that ■ the hydraulic pumps at the western septic tank had been overhauled; that for the month of June 9,400.000 gallons of water had been pumped; that during Juno nine building permits had been ■ issued.
