..Poneke and Wellington met at Kilbirnia No. 1 ground, the former team winning by three tries, one of which was converted, to two penalty goals ' Pone-ke compiled their score in the firstspell, while Wellington secured a penaltygoal. After tha change-over Wellington improved on their previous showing, and practically held- their • own, adding another goal to their credit The.teams were:—.• . Poneke kicked off, playing against the sun, \V elhngton having won the toss. Wellington cunckly- entered their opponents twenty-five, but only for ■ a few minutes, Poneke working play gradually into safer territory,'where Hall had an unsuccessful-shot at the posts . from a mark-. t Spriie. kicking, exchanges resulted in .no satisfactory advantage to 'either side,, but, the Poneke backs got smartly into action,_r pressing Wellington on to their own lino, and compelling them to I torce down.; Wright essayed a, pot'at! goal without' -success, and a -moment" or two later Sid-: Shearer failed in a penalty kick ■• from .just behind'the twenty five. Wellington forwards followed up well under' a long kick by Ambler; and a scramble ensued in front of Poneke's goal, a; good deal of fumbling taking place. -The Yellows sent the ball out smartly-.to. the left wing, and Glenny, who had a clear opening, dropped it, missing what should have been a sure try. Poneke turned th e tables again, placing,their opponents on the defensive on their goal line. After a couple of Scrummages, Wellington found relief in a free kick. Calcinai made a bold attempt to break through, securing in the loose, and dribbling over the line, but Brook was .a fraction of a second too quick for him. Tunnington was in•strunierital in. reversing •another Wellington incursion,'and-after a breakaway, in which the backs handled ; the ball.well, ho ran through under the posts. Gib- ! son's kick was low.- Poneke 3, Wellington nil. After a temporary offensive i Wellington wero again hard pressed. CalI cinai secured inside the twenty-five, gave i the dummy, and then sent out to the '• backs, Foley scoring near the corner. , Sid Shearer did not make sufficient allow-j-ance for the wind. Wellington opened their score a couple of minutes later, Ambler making a good penalty kick. Just before half-time Jimmy .. Tilyard scored a third try' for Poneke, Wright converting.' Poneke 11, Wellington 3. The Wellington- forwards forced the pace in the second half, and at the end of a long diagonal movement wore ■.awarded a penalty, Ambler making good again. He was entrnsted with two more shots at the sticks during the spoil, but narrowly missed with each. Towards the close Wright misdirected a fifteen-yard I kick' from almost in front of the goal. Wellington continued to stand up well till the finish, the game being vory open. Poneke 11, 'Wellington 6. Mr. G. Bradley was referee.
