SOUTH WAIRARAPA TROTTING CLUB

Since the club was instituted the South Wairarapa Trotting Meetings have been held at the Moroa course, at Greytown. A change of venue was considered desirable, and yesterday's gathering, with the sanction of the stewards of the Wairarapa Racing Club, was held at Tauherenikau. The weather was favourable, and the attendance satisfactory. Among those present were several officials of the district racing club. Mr. J. H. Tompkins acted as starter and Mr. J. F. Thompson (president of the club) as judge. The stipendiary steward in attendance, Mr. W. G. Garrard, of Christchurch, had an easy time of it. During the afternoon he cautioned one of the successful riders for looking round. Mr. C. Lowe, of Wellington, was in charge of the totalisator. The amount handled, £8695, was £1338 in excess of last year's meeting. Mr. Walter Armstrong (secretary) and other officials worked hard to make the meeting a success. The Hawkes Bay-owned Lylock was a good favourite for the principal event, but after being prominent for three parts of the journey she failed to stay the distance out, and the Petone-owned Hayseed won comfortably. The Canterbury contingent was not so strong as usual, and only scored in two events. Saint Bell, a two-year-old colt by Logan Pointer—Ma Belle, made his _ first appearance in the Bey Handicap and scored decisively. Peter M'Millan won the event for trotters after a good race with Loch Lomond, who was successful in the event named twelve months ago.
