MINER SERIOUSLY INJURED. (by telegraph— press association.) WAIHIj 2nd February. A miner named William O'Neill was badly crushed about the shoulders and chest while riding on a-.fckip in the shaft of the Talisman mine yesterday afternoon. Little hope is held out for his recovery. ACCIDENTS TO SWIMMERS. At the Thorndon Baths yesterday morning, a man, P. Rae, fainted when in the water. Luckily, his plight was noticed by other bathers, and Rae was carried ashore, where the custodian ap« plied successfully restorative measures. Another bather, this time at LyaU Bay, had a close call yesterday afternoon. After shooting tne breakers for some time, he became practically unconscious, and in this condition was noticed in shallow water,' attd Was pulled ashore by P. J. Ryan. The Maranui Surf Club operated resuscitation measures successfully, the swimmer coming to after some fifteen minutes' work. Another accident (of a different na. ture) befell a city clerk on Saturday afternoon. His clothes, which he hart left on the sandhills, were destroyed by fire, and he was forced to wait about th& spot until new attire was pr<x:ured from town. /It is not known how the fire originated. The sudden death of a man named John Christopher, of 19, Martin-street, was reported to the police this morning. Christopher, who was about 68 years of age, had been suffering from a chest complaint for some tiflte. Last evening he went to bed, but he took ill later in tie evening, and a fellow-boarder went for Dr. Mackin. The doctor Was unable to attend, but sent some' medicine, which was administered to. the deceased. No improvement in his condition resulted, however, and Dr. Martin was called in. Hrf arrived at 12.15 a.'m,, and Christopher died just afterwards. Dr. Martin was unable to certify as to the cause of death, and an inquest will be held in due course. An inquest was held by Dr. M'Atthur, S.M., District 'Cor-oiler, at Petone, yesterday afternoon, on the body of Gladys Sykes, a single woman, who died suddenly on Saturday. Dr. Harding, who nad made a post-mortem examination, deposed, that death was due to pneumonia, not of long standing, and the Coroner returned a verdict accordingly. The strenuous life of to-day renders accident and sickness insurance no longer a luxury, but a necessity.
