THE HALE-HOLIDAY.

SATURDAY OR WEDNESDAY? SHOPKEEPERS' MANIFESTO. On Wednesday next the electors of the city will be asked to vote- on the Saturday half-holiday question. Altogether there are 28,970 names on the roll, and, having a regard for pollings in the past, it appears likely that some 17,000 or 18,000 electors will record their votes. On the latter basis it* would require just one over 90CO to carry the day in favoui of Saturday, closing. The .small shopkeepers are dead againtt any change, and their reasons are amply set forth in our advertising columns to-day. In a lengthy] article published in The Post on Wednesday last, the pros and cons of the matter were outlined. The supporters of the existing order of things lay great emphasis on the fact that at present it is optional for a shopkeeper to close on any day he pleases in the weelc. The small shopkeepers do most of their business on Saturday, , and a. change will mean great loss, they declare, and the driving out of business of many, people who have been here for years. In, the interests of the working men. alone they ask that the existing state- of affairs should not be disturbed.
