ROME.

A complete rupture is reported between the Pope and the Emperor of Mexico on ecclesiastical matters. The Pope refuses to require Bishops to take the oath of allegiance to the King of Italy, and negotiations have taken place between both Governments without result.

The s.a. Egmont., Captain Hagle^, arrived in harbour yesterday evening, from Auckland and Napier. She brings 65 passengers, the greater part of whom are for Hokitika. The N.Z.S.N. Co.'ss.s. Wellington, Captain Francis, arrived this morning from Nelson, bringitig a telegraphic summary of the English news. The Phoebe, from Sydney and Nelson, arrived at half-past eight this morning. The s.s. Wanganui, Captain Low, arrived last night from Wanganui, bringing seventeen saloon and twenty steerage passengers. Messrs Gereenbergs' equestrian troupe have also arrived. The s.s. Ahuriri, from Wanganui, arrived last night. There is no news worth extracting from the Wanganui papers. Three distinct shocks of earthquake were felt in Nelson on Saturdey night last, about half-past twelve o'clock. Miss Aitken, the celebrated elocutionist and tragedienne, so well known in this citj*, will arrive here in the course of next month . Miss Aitken was well supported during her last visit, and her reading and delivery of lectures on poetry and music were highly appreciated. By the Home News we learn that the barque Ballarat arrived at Gravesend from this port on the 6th June. Also, that the ship Asterope, Captain Stewart, sailed for Wellington on the Ist of June, and that the James Lister was loading in the docks, and expected to leave at the end of July.
