MURDER OF LIEUTENANT WARING, 50th REGIMENT.

The Independent of this day publishes an Extra, containing a letter from it correspondent at Wanganui, dated 10th August. It says :—: — The Moa steamer arrived in the river last night, bringing the melancholy intelligence that another officer's body has been carried off by the rebels 5 that they have obtained possession of another head as a subject upon .which to practice their barbarities. Lieutenant Waring, 50th Regiment, was stationed at Kakaramia, the farthest outpost up the Patea. He had always shown himself a brave young officer, and was in the

habit of going out shooting pigeons, * ow ling-, &c. On Tuesday morning last, In £>mp»/&y with four men of his regiment, he vffitft up the Patea River in a boat for the purpose of fowling. They were just opposite a small scrub when a volley was fired at them> and poor Waring fell, shot through the head* Another volley fired at them wounded a man in the shoulder. The men, seeing their officer dead, and knowing that if they stnek to the boat, they might perhaps, all be shot> immediately jumped out of the boat and swam for it $ so the boat cohtniniag the body foil into the hands of the bloodthirsty wretches' Stich is the general outline of the case, as far as I have been informed, and such will happen repeatedly for years until an example is made.
