MURDER OF Mil. FALLOON, AND THE CAPTAIN AND MATE OF THE KATE

We take the following from aa Extra published by the Southern Cross : — Mr. James Falloon left Auckland in the steamer Rangatira for Whakatane. He left the steamer at Tauranga, and went on board the cutter Kate, which was chartered by Mr. Bennet White, of Auckland whose store was lately robbed at Whakatane. On the arrival of the Kate off Whakatane she was visited by some of Mr. BWhite's friends. The vessel anchored for the night. The natives made up a plot for the murder of all on board. Te Hemara was chosen to carry it out, and next morning a boat's crew went on board, when it was found that Mr. Falloon was ill in his berth. A man named Hone went down and got his revolver. The natives all took a hearty breakfast, then a sign was made, and each Maori rushed at his man. Hone fired at Mr. Falloon, wounding him in the arm. He then received a succession of shots which killed him. Captain Pringle and the mate fell by the tomahawk. Mr. White was saved, as was Mr. Robinson and the cook Campbell " The vessel was plundered and burned. Since the above was written, we have heard that Mr. Robinson, a passenger by the Kate, who intended to settle at Whakatane, was killed by the natives. Mr. White made his escape to Maketu, where he arrived on Wednesday afternoon. A letter received in Auckland from a gentleman in Tauranga, states, that it was currently reported there that three officers of the 68th Regiment, who had gone out shooting, were detained by natives.
