NEWS AND NOTES
Neglect of any part of the automobile which need lubrication is sure to result in unnecessary wear. This fact should be borne in mind by every owner of a motor vehicle. • • • When the water in your radiator boils, don't unscrew the cap until it has subsided. You may be badly scalded if you open the radiator too soon. * * * On some cars there is some inaccessible place wherein a nut or bolt might readily be lost. By feeling about with a small magnet it is often possible to recover such oddments more quickly and with less trouble than the more obvious method of fishing about with a piece of bent wire. A magnetised screwdriver will be found very useful for replacing small screws which are awkwardly situated. In tightening wheel bearings, car owners are warned not to get them too tight. They are told that the wheels should "oscillate" freely. What does oscillate mean in this paricular place? The wheel that oscillates is one that when spun by hand will stop and reverse in the direction of rotation when the original force is expended. If the bearing is adjusted in such a fashion that the wheel will not oscillate, it very likely will be ground to pieces in a short time. . * # The number of men employed in England on works of improvement and new construction on classified roads and bridges, excluding those on work of maintenance, repair and reconstruction, is approximately 21,500.
Skilled Scottish engineers, who have years of experience with American motor firms, are returning to England owing to the intense trade depression through which the United States is passing. They believe that Britain within a year will experience a great trade revival. * * • A puncture alarm, providing the driver with a signal on the dashboard which operates instantaneously in cases of bursts, punctures or where the correct pressure in any tyre should fall below normal, was recently invented by a Sunderland, England, man, Mr A. G. Foulds.
