FUEL CONSUMPTION.
The consumption of fuel of a motor cycle engine depends upon the work that it does in a given time. At first sight one might expect that the same amount of work would be done by riding one mile in one minute as by riding one mile in two minutes, because the distance covered is the same, and although in the latter case the speed is only half that of the former, the engine is running for exactly twice the time. Actually, however, in doubling the road speed, one increases the resistance by very much more than double, and, consequently, the work that has to be done in overcoming this resistance is more than twice that at half the speed. Hence the greater quantity of fuel consumed.
