Robert Day was committed for trial at Christchurch on January 12 on a charge of forging a cheque for LIOOO on the Bank ot New Zealand. The circumstances are rather peculiar. Tho theory of tho prosecution is that accused got possession of the title deeds of two farms belonging to his father Daniel Day; that he went to the Bank of Ne <v Zealand with these and repre aented himself to the manager as his father, and obtained an advance by depositing the deeds. Mr Andrews, who was acting tnaiager of the bank at the time, swears that accused ia tho man to whom he gave the advance, but he previously described the man as “ rather grey,” whereas the accused has no grey hairs visible to an ordinary observer. For the defence a number of witnesses swore that on tho day tho advance was granted at the bank the Accused was ill in bed and did not leave his WDRO. which is 15 miles from Christchurch,
