MINING NEWS.
There is no particular news from the Old Man Range. In White’s Reef Company’s claim work of driving and sinking is still being pushed ahead, and a good deal of quartz has been brought to grass. A trial crashing has been made of a few tons at Bennett’s Conroy’s battery ; the exact returns we did not hear, but we shall not be wrong in saying it was somewhat about 2oz to the ton. It is intended to put thro igh another lot from another part of the Company’s claim, and if the return from that is equal to orin anyway approaches the first, the directors, we imagine, will have little hesitation.in erecting.a battery of their own. A sample crashing from the peat western claim' is nd®*being put through the battery, from whiobgreat things are expected, as the stone looks' remarkably well. This reef is the best defined and in the strongest country of any as yet opened on the range, and the impression of those whose opinion is worth anything, is that it will eventually prove as good as any, if not the very best. Mervyn and Gavan’s tunnel workings are for the time knocked on the head in consequence of some slight dispute with the contractor. The Old Man Range Company are sinking, and the Union Company are inviting tenders for driving a tunnel. As a rule things may not be looked upon as brisk, but fresh life will be put into things generally, at once the road to the Waikaia Bush is open and cheap timber available. Of alluvial mining there is nothing fresh.
