MINING NEWS.
As the meeting of shareholders in White’s Beef G. M. Company advertised to be held some week or since in Dunedin, to consider the proposal to increase the calls from 3J to 6d per share, fell through in consequence of the inability to net together the requisite number of abareholders, a meeting is convened for Alexandra on the 22nd Inst for the same purpose. It is to be hoped a full meeting wid be held to discuss this ns well as another question or two that wants Consideration before the season advances too far. One question of not the least importance that wants consideration is that of shifting the whole affiirsnf the company into tne district, it sliould lie evident to the most obtuse that the affairs of the Com* oany could he more economically and belter mtiiayed within a few mil s of the mine, than that at a distance of 120 miles. Work at the mme, that is so far as two men and a manager can do, is progressing, but not veiy fast. By latest accounts, though the wads continue, a break nr fault i the reef has been come aorss, and driving has been stopped, and to my min I the suicidal policy of sinking an underlay shift on the reef to strike the tunnel somewhere about its end is to be adopted. Underlay shafts in strong sound country are always risky and dangerous, but in shattered slipped ground such has only been seen as yet on the Old Man Bange, the task will be no easy one. L believe it is argued that the shaft will answer for air, and to workout the stone that was come across in driving the tunnel, possibly it will, but that could be taken out far mere economically from the tunnel, to take out this bit of stone, will weaken the ground too much, and 1 think it will be admitted that the face of the spur should be kept as sound and strong as possible. Mervyn and Gavan have accepted tenders for driving a low level tunnel into their claim, and woik is to be stalled at once.
There is nothing particular doing just yet on any ot the other claims, though there are rumours that more than one is soon to make a move.
The two dredges still continue at work, and if all be true both are getting good gold. Mr M ‘Queen, who holds the chief interest in the steam dredge, was up in the district last week, and I learn was well satisfied with the way in which things were moving.
The small rush at German Hill is turning ont fairly payable, all the claims at work yielding more than good wages.
Old men tottering round from Bheuraatism, kidney trouble or any weakness will be made almost new by using Hop Bitters feely. Bead. My wife and daughter were made healthy by the use of Hop Bitters, and I recommend it to my people.—Methodist Clergyman. K ad.
