CROMWELL V. BLACKS,
The first contest of the season between these' Clubs took p'ace on the ground of Cromwell on Saturday last, and resulted in a very clo»o finish, Cromwell winning by 1 , run Tne local team bad gone to a great deal of trouble with the pitch, having removed the bard saiface, and blocks of turf fitted in, the matting being stretched over it, It was undoubtedly a bowler’s wicket, thus accenting for the small scores made on both sides iu th i fi so innings. In the second innings of Cromwell, however, the wicket played truer, and the last wicket did not fall till the score bad reached 85, Turton and Davids >n (not out) playing well fur their runs. With 72 to win Blanks started their second innings, bat were only able to put 70 together, thus losing the mutch by 1 run, Pitches, Hogan, and Bur-en showing good cricket for their respective contributions. The bowling and fielding ou both sides was excellent, and ih return match between these clubs will he looked forward to with interest.
