ALEXANDRA CALEDONIAN SPORTS.

Kyan, Robertson, M‘Kay, Eraser (Earnsc’eugh), Tobill, Tbeyera, Allan, Gnniou, Butler, Eraser and M'Ginnis. The first annual meeting of the Alexandra Caledonian Society took place on the the Recreation Reserve on New Year’s Day, and considering the state of the weather passed off very successfully. The wind which was blowing in heavy squalls with occasional showers, doubtless prevented may persons from coming from a distance, but in spite of this there was a fair attendance, including visitors from Clyde, Cromwell, and surrounding districts. In conseqnen e of .the state of the weather it was nearly 2 p.m, before a a-art was made, and as the day was so far advanced it was found necessary to modify the programme to some extent 1 in ordtet to; 'finish before dark. The reserve on which the sports were held is becoming pretty well grassed, and in a few year’s time, when the trees which are planted around it are grown up sufficiently to afford shelter, will become » favourite resort for. holding sports, pic-nir parties, and outdoor games, Mr Ryan hao the booth and did a fair business during the day, and the fruit sellers appeared to ge rid of their stocks pretty fast,; The . Bra«Baud played a few pieces during the after noon, ami this, together with the bagpipes, tended to enliven the proceedings. The different events were closely contested, and the judging gave general satisfaction. In the evening a dance took place in the Town Hall, about 60 couples being present, amthe dancing was kept up with spirit until daylight in the morning. Through the instrumentality of Messrs Attfield and Hogan, a good afternoon's sport was enjoved on New Year’s Day on the Clyde Cricket Ground. The various events were well contested, especially the Hurdle Race, which was the best handicapped raoe ot fc be day, the ; three contestants clearing the nurdle together, Keddell eventually winning by about a yard, The Old Buffer’s and Old Men’s Race caused much amusement, Hannan winning the former, and (Jren the latter.
