M ‘Kay, Junr.) 0 Netherby had the call in the betting, Lindis got ah the worst of the start, and was never able to make up the lost ground. The other three got away well together and were in a group for a mile, when Netherby drew away, and it was Been that nothing could atop him from winning. With something in hand he caught the judge’s eye half-a-dozen lengths in front of Boots, who headed Saunterer by about the same distance, Lindis cantered in st his ease. Time 3min. (Bowie) 0 0 0 Barmaid was most in fancy, and had a majority of backers in the hist heat. She got best away, but Polly was running very strong, and in the straight running wore down her opponent and won by about a length. A dividend of L 3 6s was paid to 29 backers of Polly in this heat. The second run resulted in a dead heat between Barmaid and Sarsfield, and the totalisator paid on each horse LI 13s. In the final heat, Mr Scott’s good-looking mare had things pretty much her own way and won easily, her backers receiving LI 10s from the machine. Mervyn’s b hj Sir Andly, syrs 6st 121b 0 B. Monk’s blk g Blackboy, 5 yrs, 7st9lb 0 Mr M’Kenna declared to win with Haricot, and the veteran was liberally supported to carry off the big prize of the meeting. Blackboy was also thought to have a good show in it. Mr Smith -who acted as starter the second day in absance of Mr Dawkins—got his horses away cleverly, but Magician hnng back and was never in the race. The others came past the Stand in a bunch, with Stockflower in command. The Kawaru mare kept at the head of affairs till the back of the course was reached, when she had enough of It and gave place to Haricot. Meanwhile Young Barwon was pushing along and at the Hospital turn, had been brought up on Haricot’s quarter. Opposite the Hospital the green jacket showed in -front, and from this point it was clear that, bar accident, he had the race in hand. In the straight Barwon improved his position, and without ibeing distressed came in a winner by a good half dozen lengths. HarU cot second, Spectator third. The result caused considerable surprise, as the first and third horses had the poorest support on the totalisator, which paid a dividend of L 4 9s. The number of investors was 369, the largest yet recorded here on any one event. Time, 3min sSseo. County Plate, of 30 sovs. Entrance 425. Weight for ago. Distance, one mile and a-half. At the back' of the track Resartus drew away from the company and kept the lead round to the Hospital, when Haricot oha longed the Manuherikia representative, but failed to get on even terms with him, Resartus passing the winning post two or three lengths in advance. VINCENT JOCKEY CLUB SUMMER MEETING. Stewards—Messrs J. O. Jones, Dr Hyde, P. Harrington, Wm. Jack, T. J. M ‘Kerrow, C. Huddleatone, T. Flannery, P. Macdonald, G. Naylor, R. Sheppard, P. Morgan, D. Fogarty. Judge—Mr G. R Boulton. Starter —Mr W, Greenbank. Clerk of Seales—Mr A. Sutherland. Clerk of the Course—Mr A, . Wilkinson. The first meeting under the auspices of the Blacks and Matakanni Rvcing Clubs combined, under the name of the Vincent Jockey Club, came off on the new course, situate on a beautiful flat level terrace about midway between Blacks and Tinkers, on Tuesday and Wednesday last, the Ist and 2nd inst. A larger concourse of visitors than we ever remember to have seen before at any race meeting in the district was attracted to the course on Tuesday, though the weather promised to be anything bnt pleasant; in fact, towards midday a cold southerly wind sprang up. However, nothing more objectionable followed, and a good enjoyable day was spent. On Wednesday, the 2nd, however, the wind which still continued, was accompanied by a cold penetrating rain, which poured down incessantly till nearly four o’clock, when the clouds broke and tha afternoon closed with it comparatively fine, the effect of the rain however, was to deter many from venturing out, while it caused many who had already putin an appearance to turn homeward again. The meeting as a whole therefore was not so successful in so far as the attendance of visitors was concerned, as was to have been wished for ; but in regard to the real object—good racing—there was nothing more to be desired, good fields of horses, fair straight-forward honest contests, and not a hitch throughout, the first me ting of the Vim-ent Jockey Club may acoor lingly be classed amongst the successes. A mishap unfortunately happened to the rider of Blaokboy just when he was pulling up after the running of the Ophir Handicap, the horse suddenly turned off the course, and the hoy losing his equilibrium came heavily to the ground, receiving a severe shaking and breaking one or more of his toes. The poor little fellow was conveyed as soon as soon as possible into Ophir, and attended to by Dr Hyde. A subscription was started on the course, and somewhat about L 9 was soon gathered and presented to him. Considering that it was the _ first meeting of the club, everything being new and strange, the stewards carried out the meeting most satisfactorily indeed, the utmost credit was due to them, and we have bnt little doubt that when the course is fenced, and advantage is taken of every available means for raising the needful, the Vincent Jockey Club will rank high amongst the clubs of the county. Martin Gavan, with a troupe of alert assistants, dispensed with a liberal hand the eatables and drinkables, while Mr Tamblyn supplied the most luscious strawberries and cherries to all who desired them, and Mr Ben. Charles had control over the horse paddock, indeed every department was under good control, and therefore gave unis versal satisfaction. The latest adjunct to a race course (the totalisator) came in for a large share of attention, L 490 being the total put through on the first day, L 540 on the second ; but from the large dividends declared—L9 14s, L 9 7s, L 8 7s. 1,6, L 4 11s, it was evident the principle of the money went directly to the outside public, and not to the knowing ones who spot the favorite 1 As to the racing, the details below will the better speak for themselves First Day—January Ist. M organ’s Wild Rose, 3 yrs, 7st 131b 0 Mr Morgan’s Canute also entered, and came on to the course for his trial canter, when the brute took the bit in his mouth and galloped twice round the course before he could be pulled up, he accordingly did not start for the race, Nora also was fractious and gave some trouble, in the end however, a fair start was effected. Beatrice, with Clare up, went away flying and was never caught, though on turning into the straight, Sir Auilley challenged the mare, bnt was unable to get any further than jnst up to her shoulder, On the totalisator there were only 5 investors on the winner out of 54, who got a divL of L 9 14s each.
