Having better! “ drinks round” with - ft large circle of his ac piaintances that •he would jump off the central portion •of High Bridge into Harlem Biverone afternoon, a few weeks ago, Mr lames Bromley, of New York, proceeded to •win his wager, being at the time in an -advanced state of alcoholic intoxication. Amidst the jeers of the ■“ drinkists” by whom he was surrounded wh°n he pledged himself to this hazardous enteipri-e, he staggered • out of the har-room and made his way to the middle of the bridge. There the climbed upon the parapet, not with ■ out considerable difficulty, and before v his companions, whose mirth and •mockery had now turned to horror ••and co sternation, could hinder him tfrom carrying out his purpos ‘, sprang •out into space. He was obseiwed to ’turn over and over in the air, and to >stretch himself out just before reaching •the surface of the water, which he •struck feet first As the footway of High Bridge, from which Bromley jumped, is 145 feet above the stream which it spins, the spectators of this sensational feat were justified in considering the performer a dead man, -and did so till they saw him drawn out -of the w. ter, alive though insensible, 3>v the police. In a few minutes he •came to himself, and being interrogated ais to his means, circumstances, and ■means of living, s'at'-d that he was a Hmuse painter married, and the father •o’ five children. He added that he had imputed his intention of jumping off High Bridge, if he could make it •worth his while, to his wife before •quitting her that morning, and that the only observation she had made thereupon was, “Jump, if it amuses •you Jem;; it don’t matter a cent to «i“ I" He seemed proud of his achieve Bient, and, before returning to his favorite har to “ claim stakes,” informed his interlocutors that they vwwild hear of him again in a lew dajs, it Ixdng his settled resolve to jump off Brooklyn Bridge in the course of the aveek. —Star
