ALEXANDRA TEMPERANCE MEETING.
In connection with the vi-ifc of Brothers Rev, J Buttle.G.W.C.; and D. (\ Came ion, G-W. S ; a public temperance meeting was helii in the Town Hall, Alexandra, at S p.m. Previous to holding the pub to meeting a special session of the Grand Lodge was held in the Public Library, at which 15 brothers and sisters took the Grand Lo Ige Degree. After the Grand Lodge Session the members adjourned to the Town Hall for the public meeting The chair was taken Rev. John Lothian D.D.G.W.O.T. There was a good audience, numbering over a hundred. Several glees were rendered by Mrs Aldred, Mrs Lothian, Mr Aldred, and Mr Austin ; and Mrs Lothian presided at the harmonium. The Chairman brie fly introduced Messrs Buttle and Cameron as two of the leading woikers in one of the great branches of the temperance army. Mr Buttle then gave.a most earnest, practical, and eloquent address, in which he dealt with the groat temperance question is its social, medical.
religious, political and eu monacal aspect. He also dwelt on the benefit likely to arise from the future operation of the now Licensing Act, and though some ha f said that it had been unsuccessful because so few avaded themselves of it at last election. He reviewed also the question of compensation, and concluded Ira able address by asking the aid, sympathy, and co-operation of all in the great and noble work of the intemperance reformations. Mr Cameron then gave a most interesting account of the progress of the temperance movement generally throughout the Colony and especially of the good templar branch of the temperance army, which was only instituted in Invercargill 10 years ago, and now numbers nearly 200 active lodges, representing 8000 members, besides a large number of juvenile'lodges. He concluded by uniting with Brother Buttle in asking the co-operation of all in this good work,an! that those who could not see their way to become Good Templars, or even abstaine ihould lend every aid and encouragement to those who were battling with this gre it social and national evil. At the conclusion of the meeting a hearty vote of thanks was given to Mcs-rs Buttle and Cameron on the motion of Mr George McNeill, and also to the singers, A similar compliment to tho chair was proposed by Mr Cameron. A fter the meeting a number of members of the Order entertained Messrs Cameron and Buttle to refreshments in the Public Library, when a goodly company sat down. The meeting was pleasant and sociable and was enlivened with songs and short ad- j dresses, and at the end till separated having enjoyed themselves well
