ALEXANDRA RACES.
This meeting took place on Friday last, tho 22nd inst,, and all things considered may be taken to have been a success. The attendance of visitors, amongst whom was a very fair sprinkling from the Black’s and Cromwell districts, was fully tip to the average—somewhere about 500—including the ever green and übiquitious John Chinaman, who appears to take a great interest in horseracing. As to the racing, that was uuexoeptionally good ; every event being gone for with the determination “to win if I can.” There is little doubt that every horse went on bis merits and contested each event with the greatest keenness. The result in several instances was a surprise, and caused a boil-over on a small scale. There was the usual diversity of opinion as to the cause, some averring that the upper weights were too lumpy, others again that the weights were right enough, but. the winners had the best of it in speed of foot. We will not pretend to say which was right, but in our opinion from what we saw the weights started to high, an error we hope that will not be fnlloved throughout the season by neighbouring clubs. The results of the various events will be found below In regard to the g< neral conducting of the meeting there was no special fault to find, but we think if a trifle more attention was given to the comfort of visitors it would not be labor lost. In the friendliest of spirit we refer to this shortcoming, and suggest that the club at future meetings make vp for the past. Mr L. G. Ryan had the caterin ’, and judging by the constant and steady s'reatn of visitors to his shrine be had nothing to complain of. Mr McKenna and Co.’s totalizator was .in the ground, the gross amount passing through being about L 220. A very fair amount fo* a small meeting.
