The announcement of the retirement of Prince Gortschakoff has been received with general satisfaction by the European Press, and the appointment of M. Giers as his successor is interpreted as indicating the adoption of an avowedly pacific foreign policy.
News has been received here that Mr Parnell has been released from custody and has left Dublin for England. It has transpirrd that Mr Parnell, who is now on his way from Dublin, has been released on parole for a week to enable him to visit Paris, where his sister, one of whose children has recently died, resides. Later.
Mr Parnell passed through London to-day on his way to Paris. A demonstration was organised to meet him, hut he purposely evaded it and is tiavelling at all possible speed.
A Volunteer Review was held at Portsmouth on Easter Monday in the presence of his Royal Highness the Piince of Wales and the Duke of Cambaidge. Thirty thousand men were in the field, and nothing occurred to mar the success of the demonstration. The Australian and New Zealand mails via San Francisco, which left Auckland on February 28, were delivered in London today.
The Times, commenting in its issue of April 8, upon tho annoumcement of the great land sale at Burrabozi, New South Wales, states that it affords a splendid opening in Australia for English gentry’ who are seeking cheap land, health and occupation. A diiastrous cyclone has passed over the States of Kansas and Michigan Many persons were killed and others seriously in jure 1, and a large amount of property has been destroyed. An attempt was made to blow up the hj use of Mr. Lucas, agent of Lord Clonbrock at Balinasloe, Galway, by throwing a shell containing dynamite into the building. Mr. Lucas’s house, and that of a neighbour (Kenny) were both damaged hy the explosion, but the inhabitants escaped without injury.
