HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. QUESTIONS. Replying to Mr Bain, the Hon. Mr Hall said the money fines imposed on employes in the locomotive department of the Middle Island railways was credited to the Railway Servants Benefit Fund account. Replying to Mr Stevens, the Hon Mr Disk said that restrictions in the use of firearms were enacted by the Public Works Act, and when the Consolidation Bill was under consideration facilities would be given for the hon. member introducing a clause prohibiting the indiscriminate use of such arms by boys. Replying to Mr Pyke, The Hon. Mr Johnson said that inquiries would be made into the condition of affairs existing at small telegraphic stations, with the view of relieving the operators from duty on Sundays. Replying to Mr Pyke, Tho Hon. Mr Johnson said that, with the view of preventing confusion, instuetion would be given to designate Alexandra (Otago)‘‘Alexandra South,” so as to distinguish it from Aiexandia in Auckland. Replying to Mr Fisher, Mr Rolleston said long-service pay had been given to men in the Otago police force, but Government did not think it necessary to make the practice general throughout the force.
Replying to Mr Andrews, Mr Dick said the Government would cause to he advertised in the newspapers the names and residences of registration officers also the hours and days for transacting business. MISCELLANEOUS. Mr Pyke has given a notice of motion iu favor of establishing a Legislature for each 1 3land. PUBLIC WORKS STATEMENT. Mr Hall delivered his Public Works Statement on Tuesday evening. It opens by detailing wiiat has been done in the way of railway construction during the year. The total sum expended has been 1.909,195. The result* are that in the Middle Island only 19 miles is wanting to complete the whole length from Hurunui to the Blutf—a total distance of 443 miles, and of this 9 miles will be constructed in time for the coming grain season. In this Island 140 miles remain to complete the trunk line from Bluff to Picton ; and in the North Island there is still a break of 295 miles. The extent constructed during the year in both Islands has been 106 raiies, making a total of 1287 miles of railway actually in operation in the Colony.
