The electric light is to be tested for the purpose of street illumination iu Melbourne.
Ten bookmakers were fined five shillings each for obstructing the footpath in front of Tatteraal’s, Sydney, recently. The Mount Browne diggings, New South Wales, is pronounced “ a swindle.” At Melbourne, on the 14th instant, Henderson, the owner of the steamer India), Wright (Captain), and Wallace (purser) were brought up at the Police Court, und remanded.
The census taken on the 3rd April last shows the population of South Australia to he 275,000. Mata is first favorite in the betting for the Adelaide Birthday Cup at 3 to 1. A new goldfield has been discovered at the head of the Murray River. 180 Chinese were on the ground, and getting half an ounce a day.
