The whole of the spirits seired by the Customs’ officers at Whangatata recently have been declared forfeited and condemned, no claimant having appeared. A Christchurch telegram states that since the beginning of the shearing season 100 men have left the Weka Pass Works. At Timaru a Farmers’ Co-operative Association is being agitated, and promises to be a big success. On the 21st instant, at Christchurch, a juryman at the Supreme Court called His Honor Judge Johnston’s attention to the hardship endured by some jurymen who were frequently summoned, while many gentlemen in Christchurch, who are in the prime of life, had hot their names on any jury list His Honor concurred. Evidently, he said, something was radically wrong, ami lie thought he must direct the Sheriff to inform the head of the police that the work of preparing the jury lists was very unsatisfactorily .done, and unless there was some improvement the 'person responsible, whoever he was. must be summarily treated by the Court.
It is stated that the celebrated Strauss band will very shortly visit New Zealand. The German Commissioner to the Melbourne International Exhibition has presented New Zealand with two groups of statuary.
At Wellington, on the 22nd instant,'at the Supreme Court an application was made on behalf of the Law Society for a rule absolute to strike a solicitor named C. Madden, of Palmerston North, off the rolls, on the grounds of alleged misappropriation by him of money belonging to a client. The case was adjourned for a week. A Sydney telegram states the Commission of Inquiry, which was appointed some time ago to examine into the charges pieferred against District Court Judge Meymott, has brought up its report, and Government now require Judge Meylnott to show cause against his removal from his position.
There has boon a marked improvement in general business in Timaru during the past month. The building trade was never brisker.
Heavy rains during the past ten days have- made the crops in the Timaru district Io»k splendid. On the 22nd instant a resident in the suburbs of Invercargill found an infant two or three weeks old lying outside the door, wrapped in blankets, with a feeding-bottle alongside it. It is believed that the mother is a stranger to the place. Sir G. Grey writes from Kawau that he has been ton ill to attend to any business. For the Melbourne Cup, Mata if now being backed at Bto I, and is considered first favorite.
The Hero on her last trip from Greymouth for Melbourne took away 43 pas-Bcn-.era, and 50230z. s)wt. 2Ugrs. gold. The present season will bo one of the most favorable for tbo wool-growers and agriculturists yet experienced in the Oamaru district.

Superintendent Hare, who was shot by the Kellys at Glenrowan, who lias been in a very critical state for gome days, has rallied.
