At a wool auction held recently at Goldborough’s stores, Melbourne, on the 6th instant there was a large attendance of foreign buyers, and good competition at 10 per cent, advance. Seventy-one officers of the Melbourne Lands Department have received notice of dismissal. A 45-ounce nugget has been found in one of the claims at Temora. It is stated by an engineer, a man of 20 yeais’ New Zealand experience, that the Westport coal is the best for steaming purposes he ever used in the Colony. At Christchurch there are now 100 children in the Orphan Asylum. Mr Proctor’s lectures have been well attended at Invercargill. At Wellington owing to the recent reductions and dismissals intense anxiety and apprehension prevails among all classes of the Civil Service, no man feeling sure but that h : s turn may come next. Mata is being backed for the Melbourne Cup at 12 to 1. At Oamaru, on the Bth instant, Phillip M’Carthy and Daniel M’Caathy, his son, were arrested for having rendered assistance to Martin Power, who hid a still in his possession. They wore brought up before the R.M. and remanded to Palmerston.
Mr Michael Cook has leased the front of the City Council , site at Auckland for a glass manufactory, which will he started immediately.
A yacht is being built at Auckland, for the purpose of representing that place in the international regatta to be held in Hobson’s Bay on the 15th January.
Four official Native officers in Auckland have received notice that their services will be dispensed with. On the night of tbe Bth instant a severe frost did serious damage to early potatoes, &C., at Christchurch.
At Invercargill the action of the Government in dismissing Police Inspector Fox is being ranch commented on.
Tne Australian Frozen Meat Company ship 250 tmis frozen meat per Protos on the 31st instant. The meat consists of seven thousand carcases of sheep and a quantity of beef.
The P. and 0. Company are building 8 steamers, all exceeding 40i)0 tons, and intend to employ them principally in the Australian trade.
The Sorata’s position is but little changed. She is helplessly stranded. It. is stated that it will cost more to get her off than she is worth.
On the 11 th instant, at Christchurch, a man was fined 20s for cramming 38 fowls into a coop so small that some of them wore suffocated. The burglar who entered Melbourne Oovernment House on the 19th September, and carried off a quanf.it}’of jewellery belonging to Lady llobiuson and others, has been captured. Captain Barry attempted to give a lecture at the dainty Theatre at Christchurch on the evening of the I Uh instant, but the audience interrupted him, and pelted him with eggs till he was forced to retreat. Mr Mansfor I. district judge and resident magistrate at Wellington Ins been grante I leave of absence for twelve mouths, on account of illness.
A human hand was picked up recently in Flinders street, Melbourne, bv some boys.
