A copious rainfall has taken place throughout Victoria. A passenger by the Jessie Redman, from London to Auckland, has been committed to’he Lunatic Asylum. The police will proceed against the Captain under the Imbecile Passengers Act. A smart shock of earthquake was felt at Wellington on the Sib instant. The Brisbane Government have resolved to resume assisted immigration. On the 9:h instant the longest train ever despatched from Lvttelton passed through Christchurch, viz, 80 loaded trucks, drawn by two locomotives.
Business people in Sydney have sent deputations to the Government protesting against the sale of articles in the Exhibition. I he Commissioners have notified that regulations respecting sale and delivery will be strictly enforced.
Since the commencement of the shilling days, the attendance at the Exhibition has somewhat improved, averaging about 5000 paying visitors daily Captain Hutcheson, secretary of the Australian Club, was arrested en rou'e to Melbourne overland, charged with embezzling tue funds of the Club. Tne defalcations extend to about L2OOO.
Forged Commercial Bank notes are circulating in Melbourne. At first sight they readily pass, as they are on proper paper, and bear a general resemblance to the genuine article. Counterfeit half crowns are also numerous, evidently cast from an impression of the new silver coin just imported. Jfe T. P. Wilson, for embezzling funds Marshall and Co., brewers, Dunedin, was brought up at the Sydney Police Court and discharge I, because of au informality in the w irraut.
Immensely rich go'dfields have been discovered in Queensland Lawrence, the murderer of Finlayson in Melbourne has been reprieved. On the 13th instant, at Grahamstown, a party of miners clearing the entrance to au old drive found the skeleton of a man. It is reported that it showed marks as from a blow of a pick. The body must have been there eight years. A telegram dated the 14th instant from Melbourne says—“ That Le Loup, Credit, and Darriwell galloped at Flemington that morning. Le Loup proved the best, and was subsequently much fancied for the Cup.
A strange circumstance in connection with the new lush at the Seventeen-mile Beach, Greymouth is, that the washdirt is found on a granite bottom.
