BRITISH AND FOREIGN. (From Exchanges.) London, October sth. A s'ight collision occurred between the Achilles and Alexandra ironclads. The damage has been repaired. The Kalian Press warmly welcomed the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone bo Italy. The Spanish Premier advises an alliance with Austria.

Sir Stafford Northeote, in a speech at Dublin, state that the Cahul massacre necessitated an adherence to the present policy. England alone should dominate in the Ameer’s foreign relations. He denied that there was any difficulty with the finance, and deprecated agitation in Ireland.

The Secretary of S'ate for the Home Department stated at a Conservative meeting at Leigh that our foreign policy was unchanged. The Government were not desirous to Interfere with Afghanistan meiely to ensure the domini- n of England. London, October 11th. Great activity exists in the metal markets, and a rise has taken place. American orders are still arriving. The Oriental Bank’s profits for the halfyear are equivalent to five pounds and a-ha!f per cent, interest. A four per cent, dividend has been declared. At a meeting of Stevenson and Son’s creditors, yesterday it was stated that the liabili'ies were 1.2(12,9i 13. It was resolved to accept the offer of 14s in the £, payable in two years. Bankruptcy proceedings are avo ded. News from Afghanistan states that the rebels are entrenched in Cabul citadel. General Roberts reached the city at nightfall, and decided to attack immediately. General Massey was posted at the eastern gate of the citadel to prevent the retreat of the insurgents. Calcutta, October 14th. General Roberts, with Yakoob Khan, entered Cabul ou the 12,h. October 13th The enemy are dispersing from the neighbourhood of Cabul General Roberts intended to have entered on the 12th. London, October 13th. News from Afghanistan state that Cabul has been surrendered to General Robot*. The Ameer was encamped with the main body of the troops along a ridge which overlooks the city, to guard against any treachery. 0"e hundred a forty guns and an immense amount of war material were captured. The British loss was inconsiderable.
