NOTES ON THE FLOOD.
The river, since the 20th ulfc., when she reached the greatest height, up till yesterday morning, had fallen about 15 feet, and hopes were entertained that the stream would soon be reduced to sueh a level that communication by wheeled traffic with the Toviot would be re-established. In consequence of the continuous rain since Wednesday evening, however, the water is again on the rise, and has since risen fully two feet, with indications of a still further rise. From the report of the constable stationed at Cardrona, and kindly placed at our disposal by Mr Inspector Mooro, we hear there was a heavy flood in the Cardrona River, ani that an enormous quantity of mining plant was destroyed. At Pembroke, Lake VVauaka, the only loss was of some few old huts on the margin of the Lake. At Newcastle the losses were /cry heavy, Mr Norman’s stables and largo store adjoining the hotel being carried away, as also was M’Pherson’s Punt. Amongst the numerous losses sustained through tho.late heavy floods in this district, from a general point of view, the greatest will be the loss of some myriads of trout from one inch to twenty inches in length, and which were found embedded in soft mud iu some old workings on the banks of the Molyneui, just above Alexandra. An eye-witness, ia whose voracity we have every reliance, says there were bushels of them. As the place where they were found is on the opposite side of the river, and a short distance below the mouth of the Fraser River, it is supposed they wore washed out of that stream. The County authorities have large gangs of men engaged on the Cromwell road, repairing damages in the hollow half-a-mile on the Clyde side of, and in another immediately below Adams’s dairy, the road being complely washed away. It is found necessary to make entirely now roads further
under the range, and until they are coin pietod, wheeled traffic on this thonnu>hfara will bo stopped, at tho latter of the' • 1 leen the water covered tho road to « d p'h of nearly 20 feet.
