(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) Dunedin, October 4th. Raining heavily here since last night. This morning tho Government were defeated by 30 to 28 on the Beer Bill. (PROM ANOTHER CORRESPONDENT.) Government are defeated on the Land Tax Bill, and disorganised on the Beer Bill. Both have proved total failures. The Daily Times has published a second edition. Nothing is known as to the action of the Government. October 10. The Rev. Mr M'Ara writes that assistance is ntded by many sufferers by the late floods. Subscription lists have been opened to day—Brown Ewing and Co., and the Star heading them with L2O each. Judge Williams has refused the application to remove Walsh’s trial to Dunedin. Yesterday a carter named M'Qneeney, whose brothers reside at Naseby, met with his death under the following circumstances. The deceased started with a companion from Weeks’s farm, Teaneraki for Oamaru, they, were each driving a dray containing grain, when he somehow, unknown to his companion fell off his dray, and the wheel went over him, causing instantaneous death. The English Ciickeling team will leave for. Australia by the Suez Mail steamer on the 17th October—the team comprises Lord Harris, Messrs A. N. Homby, A. P. Lucas, A. J. Webb, Howe, Maul, G. A. Absolora, H. M’Kinnon, V. R; Boyle, S. Schultz, T. Emmett and G. Ulyett. Nearly all the immigrants by the Invercargill have met with engagements at cursent rates of wages. The thorougbred horse, Sorcerer, by Tradneer, has been purchased by G. M’Gawn for 500 guineas. A public meeting has been called for to morrow, re—the flood sufferers. A telegram this morning says that tho Molyneux is again rising. It has been raining steadily since last night. There was a short debate last night in the House of Assembly, on Bowen’s motion that Reserves should be made in every District for endowments of Hospitals and Charitable purposes. Stout very strongly opposed, but it was carried by 30 to 21; Macandrew voted for the motion, and the other Ministers against it. Whitmore to day made an able speech in replying on tho Electoral Bill. The second reading was carried by 24 to 12. The dual Maori vote is certain to be thrown out in Committee.
