It is understood that Walsh, Waikawa murderer will be arraigned before the Supremo Court sitting at Dunedin next week. The Committee of the Batistan District Hospital are inviting tenders for the reerection of the building. Tenders are called for tho same—(see advertisement). The weather during the week has been anything but settled, and there is every probability of another heavy rise, little fear of any great rise in the river. We understand that tho adjourned meeting of tho County Council will bo held on Wednesday next the ICtb'lnstant. What with the notices on tho Order Paper, and the necessary work caused ‘by the floods, tho Council will have a busy time of it. We have to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of a batch of Bills apd Parliamentary papers, including Census tables for 1878, Gold-fields’ and other Departmental reports ; also, Nos. 15 and 16 of Hansard from tho Government Printer. Incur brief notice in last week’s issue of tho Tuqncst'on the fire of Mr Harrington’s dwelling-house at Blacks, we inadvertently stated that the property was. insured with the Natioualilnsuranoo Company. The local agent of that Company requests us to correct the error, and to state that ho is informed the Insurance was effected in the New Zoaland’oflico. The headstone ordered some time ago for the grave of the late Mr A. R. B. Thomson having lately arrived from tho old country, has just been erected. It is comnosed of led Peterhead granite highly polished, of chaste design, and elaborate finish ; it stands fully six feet in height, and is about ouo of the handsomest monuments in Clyde cemetery. The cost was borne by subscriptions from his personal friends, and the epitaph is brief but expressive :—“ Loved and regretted by all." The two applications for Coal Leases advertiseS in this issue go to prove cither that the coal trade iu Clyde is a very good one, or that in the management of the Leases already held there is something wrong, whichever it is we cannot say, but of one thing we are certain—there is just now a great scarcity of the article in the district, in fact, there is a famine. We have to hope the deciding on the applications will for once and ever settle the question that is harassing just all our house-wives—-“Whenare we regularly to be supplied with coal?’’ . . , It is reported from Balclutha that p, man, fast, to the stirrup of a saddle, was found in the Molyneux at Kaigangata. At a later date it is said there is no certainty as to the report. A rumor was grevalent at Cromwell, Clyde, Alexandra, and from nearly every look-out on the river that a white horse, and the body of a man fastened to the stirrups of the saddle, had been seen floating down the river during Sunday the 26th ultimo, when the river was about at its height, but no one can be found whosaw it, yet from the numerous i umors we dread the worst, and all the circumstances combined, we should point to the country above. Cromwell as the place to make enquiries if any one is missing. In a late issue of this paper appeared an advertisement under the hand of the Post Master General, inviting tenders for the conveyance of inland Mail? ior tho three years next ensuing after the Ist January, 1879, tenders to close on the 12th instant. The lines between Dunedin and Clyde are much the same as hitherto,’'the only alteration being on the Naseby line, by which the coaches will pass through Cambrian and St Bathans. Tho alteration will be a great convenience to the residents of those places. The conducting of this Lino has been always good, and w°. only hope if the present contractor does not succeed in again getting it, that his successor will be able to render so good an account of himself at the end of bis term. During the past season of floods when it was looked upon as impossible to keep time, yet it was done, and by this line, communication with the sea hoard was regularly maintained ; all things considered, great credit is elite to the contractor and the drivers (Devine and Cook) for the faithful performance of their duties, and we deem, at this time when the question of the Mails is a leading topic of conversation in many quarters, a passing word of praise will not be out of place. With respect to the other route, by the way of Lawrence, is unaltered. Tho present contractors of this route, (Messrs Craig and Co ) have no easy task, and their venture, in consequence of the destruction of the Beaumont bridge, the wire of the Alexandra ferry, and the breaks in the road between Clyde and Crom well, and between Cromwell and Queenstown, thereby necessitating tho use of a number of extra vehicles and horses cannot be a paying one just now ; however, against all difficulties they are fighting manfully, and have, excepting a few days, delivered the Mails regularly.
