The Dunstan Times.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1878.

Beneath the rule of men entirely just the ten is MIGHTIER than the sword.

Mr. Macoeoroe, County Engineer, has kindly shewn us a telegram, received by him from Mr Usher, Resident Engineer, Public Works Office, Dunedin, to the effect that that gentleman will leave town on the 11th inst., for Clyde, to inspect and assess the losses sustained both by public bodies and private individuals by the late Hoods. As it will be impossible for every nook and corner of the district to be visited we would recommend all those who have sustained any loss to place themselves in immediate communication with the County authorities and supply that body with every information. With the view of alleviating, in some measure the distress of the sufferers it has been suggested by several of our contemporaries —most notably the Evening Star and the Wellington Post—that a flood fund should be opened thronghout the Colony, and whether it is that the suggestion has been acted upon, and that the Government are Bending on to the principle scenes of the disasters competent persons to assess the losses with the view of affording the Committee reliable data to work upon in the distribution of the monies subscribed wo cannot say. Wo merely state wdiat comes under our notice, and in doing so feel we aro but doing our duty. That a special call should be made on those who were fortunate enough to bo out of danger’s reach is only reasonable, and our faith in the philanthrophy of the people is somewhat shaken when wo think that decided steps have not ere this been taken. Our northern coutcm-

pomry say# wo ihj nil of ouo family—north and south alilco. members of ono Colonial family—and the Bufferings of ono section should bo readily alleviated by the residents elsewhere who have cecapod such a painful visitation.
