IVe regret to learn that there is some danger of the district losing tho public services of Mr A' invent Pyke, both in his Parliamentary capacity and also as Chairman and Member of the County Council. In our report of the Alexandra School meeting last week we omitted to state that there were 11 candidates for the office of' Committee-men, of which the following 7 were elected :—Messrs J. Rivera, 30 votes; G. M‘Donald, 16; R. Finlay, 16; W. Thayers, 14; J. Allan, 11 ; T. Brown, 9 ; A. Cameron, 7. The remaining four were Messrs J. Simmonds, W. Robertson, D. Robertson, and W. Fraser. There was alto a special vote of thanks passed to Mr Rivers for his past services as member of the School Committee. A fire, resulting in the loss of the house and furniture, belonging to Mr Matthews, occurred at Cromwell on Tuesday morning last. The tiro was first discovered by Mrs Matthews, who was awakened by a child crying, when she perceived a smell of fire ; she aroused her husband, who, on entering the kitchen, found it in flames. The political crisis in Victoria continues. Ministers are not pausing iu their course in the matter of dismissals. A further batch of officials have been dispensed with, including all the principal officers in the Education Department and supernumerary clerks. Numerous meetings have been held in various parts of the country, but only the Ministerial side is allowed to he heard, the other side being howled down. At Sandhurst recently two Opposition members of the Assembly attempted to speak but weie howled down and one maltreated. When the Assembly meets a petition to.tbo Queen will be adopted. Among the better classes feeling against the Government ia intensifying. Sir Bryan O'Loughlin resigned to contest West Melbourne with Mr Francis. Theie was great excitement.
