The Dunstan Times.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1878.

Beneath the rule of men entirely just t/te pen is mightier than the SWORD.

During the past week the necessary papers completing the purchase by the Government of the Clyde bridge, and of M'CorTnick’s Victoria bridge over the Kawarau, were signed, sealed and handed over to Vincent Pyke, Esq., as representative of the Government. The next step will be the receiving of the Cheques, and the final one'must bo the throwing them open to the public free of charge, as was done on Monday last with the Bannockburn bridge. By the wholesale sweeping away of tolls for the right of crossing these atreams, an immeasurable benefit has been conferred on the district, and to our mind the occasion is worthy of a demonstration such as has never been seen before. There are some people narrow minded and ignorant enough to think, nay, there arc some dastardly enough to give expression to their thoughts and say the benefit will be very limited, and that the amounts given by the Government for these bridges could have been far better spent in other directions. To such we say—Go hide your diminished heads, and do not mar by your presence any meeting that may be got up. The throwing opsu of the highways and byways is one of the greatest evidences of advancement, and we feel proud of being under rulers of such an advanced type. Of these, the wielders of County rule are in no way behind, more especially the Vincent County rulers, and When the day arrives for an expression of opinion we trust they may be placed in the premier place, and receive that meed of praise they are so justly entitled to. That the County was the fulcrum upon whkh Mr Pyke mainly rested when levering out of tho'Government cheat the amounts to •purchase the three bribges, there is but little doubt yet that gentleman’s exertions must be admitted. There are but few who would have been so successful, and the district, to a man, should be honest enough to acknowledge it—we do so, wo therefore feel that wo do not fail in our duty'.
