ALEXANDRA TOWN COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the above Council was held on Wednesday, October 11th, 1876. Present—A full meeting of the Council. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was received from the Lawrence Town Council, asking this Council to support the efforts now being- marie by their Council with the General Government to have the permanent way laid so that an early opening of the line may he accomplished. Cr Theyers moved—That this Council accede to'the request, and the Town Clerk ho instructed to write to the General Government, urging upon them the necessity of having the line open as soon as possible. An application was read from Mr T. Brown asking permission to occupy about an acre of ground in front of his residence. Resolved—That the Town Clerk reply stating that the Council cannot give permission to take up ground so near the river, but have no objection to him taking it up at his own -risk.

An application was received from Gim Lee for permission to take up 27ft. adjoining his present holding.—Application refused.

A petition was received, signed by twenty ratepayers, asking the Council to build a Town Hall. Cr Simmonds’tnnvcd— That the Council wait upon the Agent of the Bank of New Zealand to make arrangements for an overdraft for the purpose of building a Town Hall. Seconded by Cr Ivl ‘Kersey, and carried.

Cr Simmonds moved—That a letter of testimony be sent to Mr T. Fergus, late Distrct Engineer. Seconded by Cr Cameron. and carried.

The rate for the current year was fixed at Is in the £.

Accounts to the amount of L2O 8s Cd were passed for payment.
