CROMWELL SPRING RACES.
o These Races came off on Friday and Saturday last the 6th and 7th instant on tho Cromwell race-course, and so far astho weather and the number of competing horsee, was a successful affair, but I was sorry to note that the attendance of visitors was far below that of former years. The absentees, principally, were the miners, of which class 1 noticed but few—this fact was pretty freely commented upon, and the question was frequently asked—was the cause to be .assigned to tho indifferent position the mining classes occupy at the present time through the severity of the past winter, which had caused an enforced idleness of some months duration, or to the diminution in tho yield of gold, or to the lessening of the mining population, or lastly, that the programme of sport issued, was not of such a character as to attract them ; to this latter I think it was dne, and I cannot but suggest to the Cromwell Jockey Club, when they next come before the public and their available means does not exceed T.OO, that they limit the call on the public to one day, and not linger it over two. Of the racing itself, it was hot first class; we append the particulars. The booth was under the superintendence of Mr C. Rylnnd, who thoroughly merited the support he received. The utmost good order was observed, and the stewards, sav. ing in the delay of slarling, which, however, was caused through some defect in tho
weighing scales, did everything in theft 1 power to make the meeting a success. First Day.— Friday, October 0.
Maiden Plate, of 10 sov*. For all horses that have never won an advertised prize of over L 5. Distance, one mile. Weight
for age. Mr M ‘G regor’s r g Locket, Aged, Vat 61bs (Tarry) 1 „ J. Duhig’s b g Boughlecn 'Dhoun, 4yrs, Bst lllbs ... ... 2 „ R. Stewart’s Spinaway, 4yrs, Sat 91bs 3 Rosebud, Bst 91bs, and Iron Heart, 9st 51d, also Tafn. This was a good race, and may bo classed as the best and truest of the day. Bougbleen Dhoun 1 took the'lead, and for half distance looked all out the winner ; the roan, however, who had been in the rear, kept forging ahead, 'and at the turn ‘ for home collaring the leader, a well-contested run home ensued, resulting as above, tho weight for Spinaway was too much, however, the little mare r4n well aUd game. Hack Race, of 10 sovs. For bona fide hacks. ’Distance, three-quarters of a mile ; heats. No weight tinder 9st. Mr Goodman’s b m Foam ... (Low) 1 1 ~ M‘Gregor’s Freeze ... ... 22 ~ Eastwood’s Artful Joe ... 3 3 This, to every appearance, was a conclusion, as Foam got the start in each heat and won as she liked. Spinaway also went to tho post, but managed to unseat her rider and get away. Mistletoe got the advantage of the start and was never collared, though the grey, for the last quarter of a mile, gave him all his work to do to keep his position. Hack Selling Race, of(10 sovs. Distance, onejmile. No weight under 10st. Winner to bo sold for Lls; surplus to go to Race

Winner to be sold for Lls ; surplus to go to Race Fund. Mr Taylor’s Frances ... (Fraser) 1 1 ~ Bell’s Iron HSart ... (Lowe) 2 3 ~ M‘Gregor’s Clyde ... (Barry) 3 2 „ Partridge’s Echo ... (Mayne) 4 4 Clyde was much fancied for this event, but tfie mare cut down the field both heats, winning with comparative ease. Spring llanbtcap, of 20 sovs. Distance, one mile Ond a half. Mr Stewart's ch m Spinaway, 4 yrs 6st 121bs (Allen) 1 “Taylor’s g g Haricot, 6 yrs, 9st slbs (Fraser) 2 ~ M‘Gregor’s b g Freeze, aged, Bst (Clare) 3 Mr Dawkins got the trio away 6t good terras, and fot half the distance no advantage was apparent, except that Freeze seemed to bo going rather stiffly. At tho threequarter post Haricot made an effort, and headed the mare, but Allen at once let her out and again took foremost rank, which by careful riding he maintained throughout, winning by a length in fast time. A good pot of money changed hands on this event, as Haricot was much fancied. The weight told, however, while no doubt the excellent riding of Allen had nttlah to do with Spinaway’s victory, which was a popular one. Consolation Handicap, of 5 sovs. Distance. three-quarters of a mile.
