CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting was held on Wednesday evening, the Cth instant, at the Council Chambers. Present: J. U. Cambridge, Esq., Mayor, and Councillors Patterson, Marshall, .and Auckland. The inward correspondence as follows, was read and received From Mr. Hueaton one of the assessors respecting the assessment ; From the Town Clerk of Dunedin, with reference to Ordinances ; From the Town Clerk of Alexandra, in reply to letter with respect to Waipahi Railway, in which he stated the Council M ould co-oj crate with the Council of Clyde in memorialising the Covernraere on the subject, or in any other w r ay that the Council would suggest; From V. Pyke, Esq., complining of exoeraive assessment-on Section23..'blockll. jFromlMr Millar, F.S.A., forwarding photographic survey of the Otago Grand Central Trunk Railway, known as the Waipahi, together with the corr cted report, for the ass-'stance of the Council; From John Baker, contractor, applying for an extension of time to complete his contract in the formation of the new road at the rear of the west side of Sunderland streit. The outward correspondence was read -*ni adopted, as follows —To the Corpora tin of Cromwell and Alexandra, asking for their co-operation in the matter of the Waipahi Railway: To Lit Honor the Superintendent, requesting information as to the Local Revenues Ordinance, 1572, and asking for copi.s of the different Ordinances relating to the same; To the Assessors appointed for the current year, calling upon them to complete the assess ment by the 2Sth irst. ; To J. Holt, requesting him to keep a supply of water in the channels in Sunderland-street., according to his agreement; To lbs Honor the Superintendent, enclosing memorial to his Excellency the Governor, in the matter of the Waipahi Railway, for him to forward the same to the Colonial Secretary ; To his Honor the Superintendent, requesting the assistance of the District Engineer in the matter of the proposed bridge across the Molyneux at Clyde. There was other correspondence, but of no public interest. Resolved. That the Assessors beFequested to furnish the Assement list as made out. Resolved, That a copy of the memorial to his Excellency the Governor, in the matter of the Waipahi Railway, be forwarded to the Corporation of Alexandra at onco. Resolved, that 0 "c month’s further time be allowed John Baker to complete his contract. Accounts to the amount of 18/. 3a. CJ. were passed for payment. Cr. Patterson called the attention of the Council to the scarcity of water in the Tmvn Race. After a few 'remarks, it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the Mayor. Tbo Memorial of the CorporaHon of the T..wn of Clyde, in the Pr-n inco of Otago, Colony of New Zealand, Humbly showeth : 1. That your petitions) s’ township hj situate on the main interior line of roa 1 through t l6 Province of Otago, and in the centre ef large and permanent gold-fields. -. Tint your petitioners, in common with the inhabitants of the districts o r Cromwell, Alexandra, Roxburgh, end Tapanui are desi-ous of being brought into railway communication with the line now being cons'ruefo 1 between Dunedin and Invercargill. 3. That your petitioners’ township and the whole of (the b-fore-mentioned districts will not be benefited in any Degree by the construction of a railway from Tokomairiro to Lawrence, as jour petiiionc-rs arc info;me lis contemplated, the road from Lawrence upwards to yom- petitioners’ town being in a very bad state for a considerable portion of the year. 4. That your petitioners’ town and district, and the country for many miles, including tlie reefing districts of Garrick and Bendigo, would be immensely benefited by being brought into easy communication with the vast forests of Tapanui aud the seabo.v d to the south, mining to any depth being at present impracticable, owing to the entire absence of an indigenous growth of timber. 5. That large districts of fine agricultural land would be thrown open to intending settlers by the construction of a line commencing at the township of Clinton and ending .at Clyde or Cromwell, as might be determined. 6. That a railway made to Lawrence will never command any but local traffic, whereas a railway from Clinton to Clyde or Cromwell would at all times command a large extent of country on either side for its whole distance. Your petitioners therefore pray that, before your Excellency shall be pleased to enter into any contract for the construction of the proposed railway from Tokomairiro to Lawrence, your Excellency will cause inquiries to be instituted as to the relative advantages of the two proposed railways before mentioned, the extent cf conntiy and population they would respectively benefit, and the traffic returns which may be calcu ated upon from either line.
