ALEXANDRA

On Monday evening, the 23rd iust., a ball was held, and on Tuesday, the 24th . inst., an auctiou bazaar was also held in the library-hall, Alexandra, in aid of the funds of the Dunstan District Hospital, and both were successes in the highest degree Tho Committee, Messrs. James Samson W. Robertson, Allen Cameron, M'Devitt, J. Grindley, and others, and Mr. R. Mercer, Secretary, deserve the sinccrest thanks, as to the untiring zeal and energy displayed I y them in comection with the whole altar is to be traced the result attained. The ball took more the character of a family reunion devoid of all stiffness and formality and consequently waa most enjoyable. About thirty five couple were present. The auction bazaar which came off on Tuesdayevening, leaves nothing to be regretted of, the appeal for gifts was met with a most liberal response, and Mr. Chappie who officiated as auctioneer, coul I scarce keep time with the bMs so eager were the bidders to shew their deep - sympathy for ■ the charitable cause that had occasioned their gathering. The gifts which were of the most varied character were tastefully arranged, the Berlin wool and ctotchct work of Mes lames M'Guinniss and Carroll bearing the palm—and the Hall when the company had well assembled and the knight of the hammer mounted his rostrum preparatory to a start, presented as pretty- a seen as coul I well be desired, The amount realised was about 50/.

On Saturday right next the sale will be continued, a number of the gifts not having been disposed of, and a number of promised contributions not having been received by the committee.
