The English Mail conveys to us the intelligence that Bishop Nevill leaves Engaud this month for Otago. The Canterbury Flax Society intend to hold an exhibition in December next, and offer a prize of 2601. for the best flax-dress-ing machine. The Committee of the Wakatip Hospital are taking steps to recover payment from tho§e who have received the benefits of the Institution, but who are now in circumstances to contributejto its support. Mr. Trollope, the popular novelist, in company with Mrs. Trollope, who are now making a tour of the Colonies, may be expected at Clyde to-day, en route for Tuapeka and Dunedin. To morrow Saturday the 10th. inst. Mr. J. C. Chappie, will submit to public competition at Alexandra a fourth Share in the dredge Kearsage together with the interest in <ne of the highest claims in the Molyneux. Murray’s World Circus, on Wednesdy Evening last gave one ef ther tatleuted performance at Clyde, and were well received. On Friday, and Saturday, they visit Drybread where we hope they will meet with the support they richly deserve. The contractors for gravelling and leveling Sunderlaud-street, Clyde, commenced operations yesterday morning, and it appears to us that if quantity will make a good roadway, Clyde ought soon to be able to boast of one of the best made streets in the Province. . We are requested to state that Mr. J. C. Chappie will sell by public auction on Saturday, (to-morrow, the 10th instant, at the Criterion Hotel, Alexandra, at 6 o’clock sharp, a one-fourth share in the dredge “ Kearsage. ” For full particulars we prefer our readers to advertisefhent in another column. \ Tuesdays Dunedin Coach did not arrive until Wednesday evening 24 hours after time. Mr. H. Ketllefold the driver informs us the weather down the country has been unprecedentedly severe for the season of the year the entire country from Black’s to Pig-root being coveredjwith snow, rendering navigation all but impossible. By advertisement in our Cromwell contemporary we find that an Auction Bazaar in aid of, the funds of the Dunstan District H hspital will be held shortly. We hope to see the same movement initiated here so that the debts of the above Institution may be paid, and the wants of those unfortunates supplied have recourseto a Hospital for succour. The coach from Dunedin, with the mails, which was due on Tuesday evening, did not arrive till Wednesday night, twenty-lour hours after time. There can be not the slightest question but that these vexatious delays are to be attributed to the state of the roads, which are a perfect 'disgrace to the Government of any civilized country; still, some metlol could undoubtedly be discovered by which Her Majesty’s mails should be punctually delivered. In our last issue wo published an extract from a contemporary, to the effect that a party had been formed for the purpose of dredging the Molyneux by the pneumatic sy tan. Since then Mr. M‘Leilan. the engineer of the party, has visited Clyde. From what we can understand, he has entered into an arrangement with a party who possess a dredge and who own a good claim, and the whole of the machinery, including steam-engine, cylinder, &c., is expected to reach here ; also that in about twelve weeks the whole apparatus will be fixed and in working order. By reference to another column, it wdl be seen that the 'fifth monthly entertainmei t of the Band of Hope will be given on the evening of the 14th inst., for the benefit of .the funds of the above. We would state that the gentlemen connected with the above Institution have endeavored, through their tystem. to do some good to the general public. Through their zeal, in their endeavors, they have become involved to a certain amount, which they call upon the public to reimburse by attending the above entertainment.

A correspondent, whose letter contains a few remarks of rather too personal a character for publication, wishes, to be informed why, as*he meetings of the Town Council are admissible to the public, they are not held in a a room to which a reasonable portion of the public could gain admission without inconvenience to themselves or to those appointed to discuss the matters pertaining to the Municipality. We can only say that the accommodation in the Townhall is ample, and had tho small room in which the meetings .were usually held been found to afford insufficient accommodation,

there is no doubt hut that the hall itself would have heen put into use. As it js, any ratepayer is at perfect liberty to inspect the minute book of the proceedings in' Council. We are pleased to say that Mr. Holt, of the Clyde Coal-pit, after almost superhuman difficulties, is now able and 'willing to supply upjeith that very necessary—we may say, indispensible—article, coal. For some time past Mr. Holt has suffered very serious drawbacks from one cause and another; in fact it is most likely that any one with less determination would have retired from the contest with adverse circumstances in'despair. Not so, however; with Mr. Holt. Every disaster seemed to supply him with fresh energy, the result that he has at length gained a mastery. The flooding of the old shaft, the sinking of the new, the cessation of the water supply an acount of the frost, and the erection of a whim for the new shaft, have all en-. tailed expense, difficult to conceive by the inexperienced. In regard to the whim, the damage was repaired in two or three days, the repairsbeing most ably and scientifically conducted by Mr. Siedelberg We hope now that the difficulties.have been overcome, that for the futurewe may rely upon being supplied regularly with that very desirable oomnjodity—good fuel. From the Gazette we extract the follow ing : —" ‘Sections Ito 12 block XVI Cromwell township, will be offered at auction immediately after the Town sections, on the 22ud insta t, at the upset price of 21, per acre. Mining news is very scarce in the district, but w'e may state that although, from floods and other causes, the prospects of the miners in general is considered to be healthy. In the Manuherikia district, the different Companies have been impeded through the rising of the rivers, and in some instances, great loss has been occasioned through the loss of machinery. At Butcher’s gully there is new's that some good go d has been struck by an old miner, which will we hope prove ofsome advantage tohimself and others We have been informed that a few additional miners might find employment in the Manuherika district. Now that the winter is nearly over and all the delays occasioned by the state of the bad roads have been got over, it is only necessary for us to state that, had if no have been for theexcellence of the coachmanship, communication could not havebeenkept up between the different district in such excellent time, We believe that after the repeated notices that have appeared in the many of the up-country journals with respect to the state of the roads, that the Government will take action immediately with regard to the putting the roads into something like repair, which, if at once commenced, will not only be a great benefit to the travelling public, but likewise a great saving in the cost of the same.
