DUNSTAN SPRING RACE MEETING.
Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16 and 17 Stewards, Messrs William Fraser, R. M Turnbuil, A. R. B. Thomson, W. Grindley, and J. Hazlett. Starter, J. L. Handiside, Judge, D. Stronach, Clerk of the Course, R. M‘Morran. Most agreeable weather offered an inducement to holiday makers and lovers of the time honored sport of horse racing to visit the Dunstan course on Friday last 'I he attendance though not so large as we have seen on former occasions was good, and numbered with but few exceptions the whole of the sporting blood within a very large radius ; of absentees the most noticeable were the ladies, who from some inexplicable eause withheld their patronage, but notwithstanding all went as merry as a marriage bell, and the day’s sport gave general satisfaction, as the events were post entry, no great amount of betting was done, yet a lot of money changed hands with sweeps, and bv the large fields entered good sport was made. The arrangements made by the stewards for the comfort of visitors and the convenience af owners and jockeys was perfect, and elicited expressions of satisfaction. The Grand Stand in the hands of Mr. A. Moore was most comfortable, and the description of refreshments supplied were first class, and to give credit where it is due the whole was well managed. For the Maiden Plate, the first race on the programme, seven were entered, and came to the scratch and resulted in the favorite, (Cresidor) winning easily. The Hurdle Race followed for which only three started. Opinion was divided as to which should rank as favorite, but the leaning was to the side of Dr. Black, who succeeded in maintaining his reputation as the surest hurdle racer in the district and adding another victory to his long list. The Handicap Race next followed, for which seven shewed to the fore, with but one exception the handicapping gave satisfaction, and as a proof there was nothing to kick about, a middle weight, (Tonic) walked through his horses and won easily, the Rip sadly deceived his supporters, he was looked upon as being a winner but signally failed. The last race on the programme, was the hack race, (heats), which brought eight, to the scales, amongst whom were Doodlembuck, Harkaway, Stanley, Venus, Odd Stockings, Roderick, Jenny and Kate, the honor fell to Kate, wiio in fine style won both heats.
