LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At Clyde, on Wednesday last the 21st instant the sale of Town sections realised the gross sum of 110?., there were twenty two lots sold fetching from the upset price to £ 17. Mi-. George Fache begs to state that the Government Land Sale at Roxburgh which was ad"enised for Monday, the 19th instant, was unavoidably postponed till Monday next, the 26th instant. On Tuesday last, the 20lh instant, at Alexandra, there were three Sections only sold, at the unset price. At Cromwell, on Thursday, five sections only were offemal, at the upset price of 2001. per acre 1 o clay, sections in the Townships of Bendigo, Gladstone, Newcastle and Pembroke will be offer)ed on the ground at Bendigo. The Molynenx still continues at a very low level, but from the quantity of tailings running, the dredgers are doing nothing very big. We take the, following telegraphic news from the Daily Times —Supple’s case has been argued, and judgment reserved. Accounts from Malmsbury report that the reservoir there had a narrow escape, but the main embankment stood well. Heymanson and Co. clothing factors, have assigned their estate. The Dunstan district, from the number of criminals it is sending to Dunedin, must be gaining unenviable notoriety, for the last criminal sessions, burglary and larceny were the nature of the offences committed, for the coming session, sheep stealing and u lawful assaults. In all ten prisoners have been committed from the district within the past few weeks. The much-t ilked-of trotting m itch between Mr. Samson’s mare Mount Ida and a mare belonging to Mr. R. Lancaster, came off on Friday last. The match was for 30?., the distance from Clyde to Alexandra, in harness, the owners diiving. After something less than the usual delay, a start was effected, Lancaster taking the lead The Mount Ida mare broke at start, ing, thus giving her opponent a great advantage. Lancaster kept the lead the whole way, and came in an easy winner, the time occupied being about twenty-eight minutes. Later in the day the winning horse was offered at auction, on the R.tye-course, by Mr W. J. Barry, and was, we understand bought in by the owner for the sum of 501.
The Dunstan Jockey Club, as will be seen by reference to another column, have fixed the date of their annual meeting, and present to the public their programme. We must congratulate the club on having produced such a programme, and we hope owners of horses wilUmuster inrfbrceto compete for such magnificent prizes. The silver cup to reward the winner of the Ladies’ Purse shoul 1 bring forth a good field. A rumour is afloat thata gold mounted whip will be presented to the joekey who cari-ies oft' the greatest number of prizes, We trust this idea will be carried out, as the offering a prze of the like is mi extra incentive to win, and more likely than anything else to create emulation among the jockeys and each race being won on its merits. The Cromwell Spring Race Meeting takes place this day. There are four events co be run for. We should expect to see a large attendance. By the telegraphic intelligence from Victoria we learn that the entire countiy has been visited by the highest floods ever know. We take the following from the Daily Times : —“ Melbourne, September 10.—This week has been memorable for the heaviest general floods known throughout the colony, Gipp’s Land alone excepted. The Yarra, at Melbourne, was not so high as in 1863, but the Salt-water river was a foot higher, and the face-course bridge has been carried away. Great damage has been done to the factories on the Lower Yarra. At Ballarat and Smylhesdale, and westward to Warnambool, the creeks and rivers rose unprecedentedly high. In the eastward, through Avoca, Maryborough, and the entire midlaud to Castlemaine, and thence through Seymour, Benalla, Wangaratta, Beechworth, and along the Murray and Campaspe to Echuca, it is everywhere the same story—bridges, fences, and culverts have been carried away, mails stopped, c«.ttle and sheep drowned, and crops irreparably injured. Two men were drowned while saving their property, and many narrow escapes are reported, and many families through having had to be rescued the roofs of their houses.” Collins’ Variety troop on Thursday Friday and Saturday evenings last were the centre of attraction at Clyde. The Town Hall, in which they played b ing well filled on each occasion. The entertainment is exceedingly good On Monday and Tuesday evenings last they drew very good houses at A lexandra. We un derstand that th ey intend visiting Cromwell, Bendigo, and the Lakes, returning in time to visit Naseby during the race week. We are requested to draw attention to the extraordinary meeting of shareholders of the Alta Quartz Mining Company to be held at the Company’s office on Friday the Ist proximo. (See advertisement.) We regret exceedingly to record the occurrence of a painful accident that Happened to Dr. Burrows, the Resident Surgeon of the Hospital. From what we hear 1 , it appeal's that having been called upon to attend an urgent case, soon after mounting his horse at his own house, came fowl of a clothes line which dragged him off. In addition to being greatly shook by the fall, was trodden on by the horse. We have to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of ‘ Hansard ’ and a batch of Parliamentary papers. In a future issue will enter into a general review of the proceedings of th* past Session. There is a srreat deal of speculation as to whom will be our future representatives in the coming Provincial Council and the House of Representatives, Among the candidates mentioned are, Messrs Haughton, Main, Captain Baldwin, Shepherd, and one or two local personages to contest the goldfields districts, and for Dunedin, two leading members of the legal profession. We may shortly expect that an operatic troupe, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Hilton, Miss M. A. Liddle, and Sir. Leslie Charles, will pay a visit to Clyde. These artists have achieved considerable success, and will doubt less contribute au agreeable evening’s entertainment. Mr. Vincent Pyke held a Court at Blacks yesterday. In an assault case, Pitches v. Gallagher, the defendant was fined £5 and costs. There were heard a numhe" of petty cases, besides twenty four mining applications. We haye been obliged to omit our usual Bendigo correspondence, from the lateness of the hour at which it was delivered. Accounts from the Bendigo Reefs are encouraging, the Cromwell Company are busy dishing, and the Aurora Company have five stamps at work. Several of the other claims are preparing for trial crushings, and one purposes putting a wire rope across the gully, to convey stone to the mill, so as to test the value of their claim. It is officially notified that tenders will be received at the office of Land and Work, for the. survey of two thousand acres of land, in the Kawarau District, into fifty acre sections From the Australasian we take the following—“ We understand that His Holiness the Pope has been pleased to recogni e the valuable services of Mr. Archer, the Registrar General of Victoria, in the cause of education, by decorating him with the Order of Knighthood of Gregory the Great. ” A whale was caught off Waikouaiti on Thursday morning by Bradshaw’s Bay Whaling Company. Three boats .were out after it; that in charge of George Robertson, the well-known half-caste, fastened to the whale at seven o’clock, and it was killed at nine. It was fifty feet in length, and it is estimated to yie’d seven tuns of oil. The sum of over £IOOO has been collected by subsriptions for the family of the late Mr. Walshe, who it may be remembered was shot by Supple in Melbourne. This, together with the grant from the Government will bo invested for their use.
