CORPORATION OF CROMWELL
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chamber on Monday last the 29th March, at which were present, W. 11. Whetter, E;q. Mayor, and Councillors Kelly, Burres and Booth. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was read. From the chief Commissioner of Waste Lands in reference to an application from Messrs R. D. Owens and Co. for a lease eight acres of land in the Municipality working of lignite. From the Post Master General to the effect that, as the correspondence to and from Cromwell and the revenue so small derived therefrom, he does not feel justified in corh plying with the request of the Council for a triweekly mail service. From the acting Provincial Treasurer, stating that the Government had resolved to grant the subsidy claimed by the Council, and the money will be remitted to the Receiver of Revenue early in the week. From Councillor Smitham tendering his resignation. From Messrs W. Fraser, M.P.C., Brough and Bailey. The Town Clerk was directed to reply to the correspondence as read. A sub-committee was formed to inspect
the land applied for by Messrs Owens and Co. and report to the Council thereon. Resolved, That the resignation of Councillor Smitham be not accepted. ■ Resolved, That the Town Clerk be instructed to collect the second moiety of rates me the 31st July next. A vote of thanks to the Chair terminated' the meeting.
