ALEXANDRA TOWN COUNCIL.
An adjourned meeting of the Town Council was held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening last. Present: the Mayor and ful- Council. The minutes of usual and special meetings were read and confirmed. Outward correspondence read and provedA letter was read from Mr. Thomas Dunn, calling the attention of the Council to the inconvenience, &c., caused to the residents owing to the absence of the Warden. A letter was read from Mr. Sideberg, but owing to its being couched in disrespectful language it was not received. Leave was grante I to Mr. C. Morris to cart a few loads of gravel from pit on unsurveyed land top of terraces. Notices of appeal against assessment were read by the Town Clerk from Messrs. Duley and M ‘Kersey, Mr. J. G, Leslie and James Simmonds. The Town Clerk was instructed to give notice that the Council woul i sit on Wednesday at 3 p.m. for the purpose of hearing said objections with a view if possible to an arrangement of assessments appeale' against. Councillor Hillhouse stated that since the Manuherikia ground Sluicing Company had opene I up their claim at the bend of the Manuherikia River, the approach to the ford in the neighbourhood had been blocked up, he therefore proposed that the " orks Committee see into the matter and report accordingly—seconded by Councillor Jack, and carried. The Town Clerk was empowered to employ a laborer to remove the rubbish that has accumulated in the main street since its formation. Notice was given by Councillor Thcyers that he will move at next meeting, that the rate to be levied on assessment for the year 186S-9 be at the rate of one shilling in the pound. A vote of thanks to the Chair concluded the proceedings. A special meeting of the Council was heid in the Council Chamber on We nes•'ay, the 28th inst. at 3 p.m., for the purpose of taking into consideration the notice of Appeal handed in—with a view, if possible to arrange the matter without further proceedings. Mr. Leslie »as heard first and and his ob jections to assessment being considered reasonable, the valuation of Runt was re- ■ uced from £IOO to £SO. The same objections were stated by Mr. Duley and Kersey, and their assessment was re uced from £2OO to 100. Mr. J. Simmonds also pleodel that his property was assessed too high, and the assessment was reduced from *22 to £lB.
