OPENING OF THE CLYDE PUBLIC LIBRARY.

The ceremony of opening tho above Institution took place, at the Town Hall, on Tuesday evening last. The occasion was made that of a popular entertainment given by the members in the shape of essays, addresses, readings, singing, &c. The chair was taken by Mr. William Fraser, M.P.C , who was supported by the Rev. Father Wi liams. The Chairman opened the proceedings in a capital address, suited to the business of the evening, The Rex. Father Wi liams followed with an address and a reading, which was loud y applauded. Mr. H. W. Robi san did likewise, and considerably tickled the fancies of the audience by reciting, with great ta-te, one of the “ Ingoldsby Legends, Then followed an interval of sing-1 ing, when some of the local celebrities j acquitted themselves admirably. > Mr. Cope then delivered an original ( composition on “ Common Sense,’ as applicable to the present state of cob n : al society. Some more singing, and a rending from “ Uichard the Third,” by Mr, Fleming, concluded the entertainment. Mr. James ITazletr, member of the Lit r ry Commitee, in an apt speech, tillin'ed those gentlemen who had contributed to the amusements of the 1 evening, and upon a vote of thanks to the Chairman, the audience, with the exception of those who stayed to enjoy a trip on the light fantastic toe in the many p'e snres of the diner, withdrew. The entertainment was a great sue- j cess, more than ninety tickets having j been taken at the doors.
