The Dunstan Times.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 1868.
Beneath the Rule of Men entirely jvst the pen is mightier than the savoEi).
In consequence of the pressure on our columns we ore compelled to omit our usual loading article ; also several correspondents’ letters, and and other matter of interest. On Tuesday last, Messrs Cope and Fache, held their annual sale of fruit and forest trees. A large number' were disposed of, and at prices that any owner of a plot of ground could make it both ornamental and useful at an exceedingly cheap rate. We are given to understand that the Concert to be given by the Clyde Choral Society in aid of the funds of the Dunstan District Hospital, is like ly to come off in about a fortnight’s time. Tire Society are making great preparations, and the public may expect a real musical treat
A pigeou watch was shot at Clyde on Tuesday last. A large number of persons were present. There were fourteen entries, five birds being ullgwed to each competitor, Mr. Burke of Black's carried oft' the first prize, killing all his birds : Mr. J. G. G. Glassford second, killing four birds, and Mr. Stronach third, killing three birds. There has been no business transacted in the Resident Magistrate's and Warden's Courts duringthe past week at Clyde and Alexandra. At Cromwell yesterday a case was heard, Jansen v. Kidd, claim of £l9 10s. Od. for breach of contract of hiring. Mr. Badger for plaintiff. Plaintiff had been hired in Dunedin as cook for defeudana's hotel, but after a f w days "ad been discharged. He claimed to be paid for the full term of three months. For the defence, evidence was called to show that the plaintiff had spoilt several dishes, and that he was not fit for the situation. Verdict for defendant. In the report of the proceedings of the Committee of the Dunstan Jockey Club, published in this paper on the 10th July last, a typographical error crept in, which we wish to correct. Mr. Smitham's notice of motion was, —' That the Two year old race be run in 1870, and not in 1876, as printed. On Mondaj Evening last the inhabitants of Blacks and surrounding district regaled Mr. Warden Simpson at a handsome supper, at Laybold's Shamrock Hotel, Black's, on the occasion of his leaving to take charge of Tuapeka. A large number of gentlemen representing the mining and commircial interests were present and all viid with each other in testifying to the respect in which they held Mr. Simpson, not only to his ability as a public officer, but to social worth as a private gentleman. The election for Councillors to fill the usual annual vacancies in the Municipal Councils of Clyde, Alexandra, and Cromwell took place on Saturday last. At Cromwell, Messrs Burrers ami Kelly were elected, at Alexandra, all retiring Councillors were re-elected At Clyde, Messrs Feraud and Atkins were elected for South Ward, A!r. Ilastie for East Ward, and Mr Ziele for West Ward. We have been given to understand that several thorough bred " Entires ' will travel this District, during the ensuing season ; Z\lr I raser, of Earn* cleugh owning one, and Mi - . J. Monaghan, another. Full particulars of pedigree will appear at a future date. 'I he election of Wardens at the Lake's district, under tin; new Depasturing Regulations, took place on Saturday last There were elected for Queenstown, Messrs Douglas, Lawton Atkins, Commins and Goodwin. For the division of Arrow, Messrs Mir shall M'Dougall, Patterson and Smith. It will be seen by our advertising columns that an Auction Bazaar will be held at the Schoolßoom, Cromwell on Saturday, the loth inst., on behalf of the School Fund. Contributions of articles will bo gladly received by members of Committee who will aeknowlege the same in the local journal. We have been requested to call at. tention to tke following sales by auction, by Messrs. Cope and F»che,of Clyde:— On Monday next, at the Quartz Reef, Rough Ridge, the Great Easte n Claim and Plant; on Wednesday, at Naseby. MountTda, two Shares in the Ilibernia Race and Claim; and on Thursday, at the Union Hotel, Hamilton's, Billiard and Bagatelle Tables, Pianoforte &c. Also to the sale of fruit trees to-mor-row at Kidd's Cromwell Hotel Cromwell. The Dunedin Daily Toms was issued on Monday last in the form of a single sheet. The change was doubtless long needed, and we rather think it an improvement than otherwise. As far as the reading matter is concerned, the paper contains ecpially as much as when issued in its old form, while the matter is much more carefully written and selected. The o ly fault we have to find in Monday.s issue is the insertion of a column of ridiculous twaddle said to have been uttered by Mr. Warden Stratford at his farewell meeting atSwitzer's. Weconnot see that Mr. Stratford has been done any injustice to by the Government. The ridiculous nonsense uttered by him at the meeting in question would certainly justify them in doing what they have done, provide! they had not already clone it.
By reference to our Advertising columns, it will be seen that the Sporting men of Cromwell are determined not to be behind their neighbours in procuring a day’s sport. They advertise a day's racing on the Cromwell course, on Wednesday the 19 th inst We wish the same success will attend the efforts of the Cromwell committee as did that of Clyde on Wednesday last.
