CROMWELL TOWN COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Council was held in the Conncil Chambers on Tuesday the 9th day of June 18G8. Present:—The Mayor, and Councillors Whetter, Smitham, Kid'!, and Edwards. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. The undermentioned letters were read and received viz., From Mr. Gnorge Duncan, Secretary for Land and Works, stating that the Government, had been informed lhat a culvert had been obstructed by works undertaken by the Council, and requesting that stops should be taken to have the matter remedied. From Mr. G. Eliott Eliott, Secretary to Postmaster-General, informing the Council that the Telegraphist is appointed i.o take charge of the Post, Money order, and Savings' Bank Offices here. From Mr. IT. Mandors, Town Clerk of Queenstown, acknowledging receipt of £2. lis. from Council, kc. From Mr. H. Mauders, Town Clerk of Queenstown, stating that the General Government postal authorities have refused to grant a third postal service from Clyde to Queenstown, via Cromwell. From Mr, W. Fraser, M. P. C. sayingthat f 650 is placed on the estimates for the Nevis Road Works, and that the money will be placed to the credit of the Council so soon as the Appropriation Bill is passed, and that he believes the greater portion, if not the whole, of the £3OO spent by this Corporation on the road through the Township will be refunded. From Mr. James Dawkins, Butcher, for permission to make a cart entrance to his back premises. Prom Messrs Connelan and Co., Water Company. Resolved upon the motion of Councillor Edwards, seconded by Councillor Whetter, That the Council ought not to entertain Messrs Connelan and Cos, tender until they comply with Mr. Warden Stratford's Order That one sluice head of water be always allowed to flow through the Town Race. Resolved upon the motion of Councillor Whetter, seconded by Councillor Edwards, That the application of Mr. Dawkins be granted, subject to the approval of the Works Committee. Resolved upon the motion of Councillor Smitham, seconded by Councillor Kidd, — That the Reserve from Mr Goodger's to the Ferry Uoad be fence' in at once. Resolved upon the motion of Councillor Whetter, seconded by Councillor Smitham, That the Town Clerk write to Mr. D. Booth and inform him that the Council desires that he will remove that portion of his building now standing on Sligo and Melmore Streets. Besolved upon the motion of Councillor Smitham, seconded by Councillor Kidd, — | That the Town Clerk write to Mr. Fra ser, and inform him, that no steps have as yet been taken by the Government in the matter of the Road at the west end of Mclraore street, and that it is in a dangerous state. A vote of thanks to the Chair concluded the proceedings.
