Mr. Haughton said that he meant to take the opportunity—the last he should have this session, probably—of endeavouring to secure that L 3,500 should be put on the Supplememtary Estimates, for the Shotover j ' Bridge. It was perfectly absurd to say that this work should bo done out of a loan. Whatever opinion he might have as to the probability of getting a loan, he held that it j was not right that this bridge should lie j charged against it. He believed that a tim I ber bridge really could be erected forL3soo> its importance to the district itself, and to ' the whole of Goldfields district, could not : be over-estimated; anil there ought to be a bridge constructed during this year. He moved an address to the Superintendent, f0rL3.500, for a timber bridge over the Shotover; the amount to be paid out of revenue. This motion was ruled as out of order by ' the Speaker, but was only put and carried 1 on the succeeding day. Also a motion by Mr Vogel was agreed to; that the LB,OOO ' original estimate of cost be out of revenue instead of out of loan. Supplementary Estimates. Pieces of ' Plate to Messrs. '' Mr. Brown moved, "That, in the opinion r of this Council, the mining prosperity would 3 be considerably increased if the miners on the goldfields of the province had the adr vantage of scientific advice in bringing in ' their water-races, and that an address lie 3 presented to his Honor the Superintendent, 3 requesting him to place a sufficient sum on the Supplementary Estimates for the purr post of obtaining, from a competeiit hydraulic engineer, surveys and reports of the 8 principal goldfields of the province, with a view of assisting the miners and the Govern - r ment in the formation of water reservoirs ' and races for mining purposes." 1 The Secresary for Land and Works was ' understood to say that the Government did not agree that it was necessary to put a sum upon the estimates for the purpose mentioned ; but that they would support a proposal for giving the assistance of the Mining Surveyors of the different districts, ! when application was made for such services." B The motion was negatived. The Council was prorogued on the fold lowing day, Thursday, 11th June.
