THE LATE RACES.

(TO THE EDITOR OF THE DUNSTAN TIMES.) At the Dunstan Races of 1860 Mr. Duhig's Wizard was entered for the Jockey Club Han licap, in a name other than that of his owner, and was adjudged to carry Sst, and even at that light weight he was signally defeated. At the same races last year Wizard was most unreasonably dealt with by the handicappers. The special race to which I allude was a handicap for all horses, and Wizard was doomed to carry the crushing weight of 9st. 41b. Mr. Duhig at once saw that the jewel of fair-play was not with the handicappers, but whether the absence of that jewel sprang from partiality or from ignorance he could not tell. He. however, at once scratched his horse, and without delay ordered him to be turned loose on the Cromwell Flat. Mr. Smitham'sMaiiboyannMr. Limbrick's Traveller kept up the credit of the Cromwell district at the Queenstown Races, and had it not been for the wrong done to Wizard at Clyde he would have been there also. What the horse had done during the twelve months to demand extra weight is an insolvable mystery. One tiling is certain : a large amount of dissatisfaction exists among the miners of this district at the heavy weighting of their half-bred and half-trained horses. One word more, and I have done. Let the handicapping be made light for the third day, when the animals are tired after their previous great exertions. Hoping that this veto may prove a favorable hint to the handicappers at Clyde, I am. &c, SPORTSMAN. Kawarau Gorge, Jan. 14, 18CS.
