CROMWELL RACES.
MONDAY & Tuesday, Dec. 23 t 24. Stewards Messrs. Goodger, Perriam, Thompson, Kidd, Duhid, and Kelly ; Judge R. Loughnan, Eaq. ; Clerk of the Course— J. Fleming. Esq. ; Starter John Ash•worth, Esq. Monday and Tuesday last were busy days at Cromwell. The Race Meeting had drawn a large number of visitors to the Township, although, at the same time, there mieht have been more, especially as there were no races at Cromwell last year. Christmas is, however a bad time for holding a meeting having pretentions to races., at this particular season people's minds are I ocoupieb in arranging the affair; of the past year and making arrangements for the new, ! and although they expect and enjoy a little pleasure, it should be more of a domestic ' character in the rhape of family parties and quiet pic-nres. Mater and Pater Familiar, like to bo surrounded by those having a claim to their affectionp, nml the boistrous mirth of a race-course becomes therefore unpleasirig. Athletic sports are all vory well, but we really think that at this festive season our worthy bonifacc3 would do better to provide something in the shape of balls and concerts, so that even,- member of a family, both largo ana stoall, might find agreeable anYu3enicnt. If our Cromwell friends will take the hint aSdneXt year try a Spring meeting some time in October or November, the attendance would come fully up to their expectations, if not far exceed them. The DunstaVi Jockey Club might hold two meets during the year, a Spring and Summer meeting, and arrangements might be made to hold the first on the Cromwell Course. The attendance on the Course was sparing in numbers, nevertheless everybody seemed bent upon making the most of things, and to enjoy themselves withal. Between the different events, a party of seneraders afforded considerable amusement, and the result was doubtless very profitable to them judging from the successful levies of stray silver coins made by the tambourine ; the colored party sang in passably good style some very good melodies, and had the gentleman who assisted on the violin paid attention to tuning his instrument, instead of having it in a state of painful discord, we might perhaps have gone so far as to say, that the performauce of his Company was par excellence. The Grand Stand and Refreshment Saloon erected by Messrs Barry and Robinson was a most complete affair, and as strong as timber could make it, Mr. Barry having at great trouble and expense procured some good stout sticks from the Wakatip, the actual builder Mr. W. Grant executed the carpenters work in a surprisingly short space «f time, and showed himself no mean Knight of the hammer and the saw All the various other arrangements were admirably carried out, with the exception of the Race cards, which besides being incorrect, were difficult to procure, the publisher and seller of these uselnl appendages to a race meeting being in a delightful state of "mops and brooms." We think that if Stewards desire accuracy, they should place the publishing of their race cards in the hands of the professional printer. In betting there was not much done ; Musician was first favorite in all events in which he was engaged. Traveller was set down as a certainty for the Maiden Plate, and likewise Mr. M'Monan's Camel for the Hurdle Race. The race was then betweon the two, Traveller winning easily in the end, Kettledrum appeared not to have been euf-
flciently trained, or the tide of battle might* perhaps, have been more in his favor. Free Trader Musician and Mailboy had evidentAioth been in high training. The gray when covered looked splendid, and there existed not the shadow of a doubt as to who would be the winner. A very good start was effected, Musician leading, folfowed by Mailboy. Free Trader scarcely showed in the race, and after the first mile resigned the contest, Musician was artistically handled by Monaghan, who would never for one instant permit the Mail-boy dtopito hard spurring and flogging to approach nearer than abreast of his horses flank, which style of running was maintained for fully half the distance to the finish, Monaghan was loudly cheered at the conclusion of the Race. The weather was again beautifully fine, but the attendance on the course w»s not quite so good as yesterday. For the Publican's, and Storekeepers and Hurdle Races no bets could be got oft at all the favorites, Musician and Camel had so established confidence from their former days pcrforman; ces, that their winning the events in which they were engaged to day amounted almost to an absolute certainty. Ou the District H Plate, a large amount of money changed W hands, Yuung Alma wan first favorite, and as the time advanced for the race to be run, he rose rapidly in favor, and bet 3 of twenty to one went a beggiug, but he grossly deceived his friends and admirers, and was nowhere in the race, Wizard the local horse winning, Edith, second.
