BLACK'S DIGGINGS.
FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.
Blacktowk, Nov. 29, ISGS. There is nothing fresh in mining matters to report since my last. The temporary excitement caused by the opening up of the flat, has in a great measure subsided, and those miners who have secured claims are settling down steadily to work, while those who have not been fortunate enough to do so, have left or are leaving the place, thereby causing the township, despite its improved appearance, to look the picture of dulness itself. A public meeting was held at Nelson' Hotel on the 15th inst., ifor the purpose of considering the d33irability of msmorialisihg the Government to declare a township at Black's No. 1. A committee was formed for the purpose of drawing up a petition to that effect. A man named Robert Kenny was arrested at M'Pherson's on Wednesday last, on a charge of horse-stealing under the following circumstances :—Kenny who was manager for the Ida Burn Valley Water-Race Company, had been attending a meeting of the Shareholders in Dnnedin, and that in returning, his horsefgot knocked up at Lower Taieri. Divine service was being held at the church at that place. Some of the congregation who had come from a distance, had left their horses tied at the gate, and taking advantage of this, he knowingly mounted one of them, and rode it to the Upper Taieri, where he turned it out. He will be brought up for examination at the Resident Magistrate's Court, Lower Taieri, some time next week. A narrow escape from what might have been a fatal accident, occurred to a man named Peterson, in the employ of Messrs Pitches, Black's No. 1. It appears that Peterson was driving an empty dray, and as he wa3 crossing the Manuherikia, the horse stopped to drink out of the river—Peterson wishing to fill a buckot, jumped off the dray; immediately upon doing so, the horse started off, and in attempting to get upon the shaft, he was thrown down into about two-and-a-half feet water, and tho wheel passed along the whole length of his body. By a miracle, he escaped with a good ducking.
