HEAVY FLOODS.—MAN DROWNED.
Thames, This day Very heavy rain fell here all Thursday night and yesterday, causing the various creeks to overflow and flood the town to an extent not experienced since the big floods nearly three years ago. The Borough Council took what precautions they could, but the water poured down in such torrents that the culverts became choked, and two creeks, the Waiotahi and Karaka, flowed over the principal streets, which were covered in places to a depth of a foot of water and debris. The damage is considerable, mostly on the Borough and County, though private parties also lose a good deal. A shingle splitter named George Hill was washod down the Tararu creek by the tremendous freshet, and. the body was found. on the beach horribly mutilated. When last seen alive the deceased was going towards the creek bed with the intention of preparing shingle blocks, and immediately afterwards an immense torrent of water with a mass of timber swept down the gorge and carried him before it.
