RECEPTION OF THE RIFLE CHAMPION.
Wanganui, This day. Volunteer Churton, who won the rifle championship at the recent meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association, and the other representatives arrived by the Stormbird last night, and there was a demonstration of citizens. Between 3000 and 4000 persons assembled on the wharf to receive the steamer, which stuck on the flats, owing to the lowness of the tide. The representatives therefore walked into town and were met by members of the local volunteer companies and two volunteer bands, who amalgamated on crossing the bridge over the river. The Mayor, on behalf of the citizens of the town, presented an illuminated address to Churton, congratulating him and tho other representatives on upholding the honor of Wanganui so well. Captain Watt, of the Wanganui Rifles, on behalf of the volunteers, addressed a few congratulatory remarks. The representatives were then taken in procession to the drill hall, where the crowd dispersed. The proceedings were very enthusiastic, the result of the recent meetiug being warmly appreciated.
